High Master Club

Just got a letter from NRA, I was awarded the High Master classification for the 600 yard rifle competitions for the 2024 season. To get High Master, you need to be 98 percentile or higher. Can't be any prouder than that. In 2023 it was Master.

I've been chasing that for a long time but only for Bullseye Hand gun. My eye's and health have held me back after I sprung for the custom hand guns I needed to get the job done. Now I'm just happy I can be competitive and just enjoy meeting and talking with the guys and galls.

I sometimes chuckle that while I was shooting "Master" I'd occasionally be top shooter, but once I bumped up to High Master I never won another high power match! I was good enough to shoot with the big boys, but not good enough to beat them.

The club/league that I shot in only submitted the records at the end of the season, vs each match. A typical 600 yard match for us was 3-20 shot relays for a possible of 600. Our club shot one mid-range match a month from May through October.

FTR and Open, we do 20 shots per match, which is 3 matches in a day once a month. Total is 60 rounds plus sighters. We also do small bore .22 matches as well.
Last match I had @ 600 was a 598 out of 600. Only 2 nines out of 3 matches due to wind shift, plus 37 bullseyes and the rest were all tens. That 6 BR rocked.

The club that I shot at was Eastern Nebraska Gun Club, or ENGC. They have a 600 yard range with pits. The club has moved to E-Targets. I shot before the that move and enjoyed working the pits. Matches go faster with the Shotmarkers, however, half the fun is jaw jacking in the pits. I moved from NE before they implemented E-Targets.

Match results are available on their website www.nebraskafclass.com. I started on season in F-OPEN shooting [NOT RUNNING] a 6.5CM in a T2K. Quickly learned that the OPEN class was an equipment race and had a 308 F-TR rifle built for the next three seasons that I shot. The T2K is a fine sling rifle but it can’t hang with a properly built F-Class rifle. [Kind of like comparing an Nosler 48 to an HS Series 2000.] Although I did shoot High Master scores in TR, I did not get above Master in TR. Shooting HM scores for an entire season is more than 120 shots. I just felt that TR was more gratifying than Open to shoot. If you look at the current scores at ENGC on line, there’s a shooter in TR posting higher scores than the open shooters. ENGC also has a rimfire TR score match that they host.

I do have an F-Open 284 rifle that I really enjoy shooting, as well as my 308 F-TR rifle. Having relocated back to PA, I’m in the middle of BR land and can’t carve out the time to do much more than the fun “Varmint” matches that are popular here. But at least they are still score matches.
