Hunted with the .30-30 today

Too seldom do I take the little .30-30 Glenfield & 2.5x Leupold hunting. Seems I'm always worried about the potential 400 yard shot, and this little rifle simply isn't my first choice for a middling distance shot like that. But... The weather today was supposed to be rainy & foggy off and on all day - and the weatherman was right! The little .30-30 was PERFECT for the day. I passed on three legal mulie bucks, one was a decent 3x3, sort of middling size, but I've got bigger bucks on my mind...

Steep country today, some open, some forested:

Hunting with the Glenfield put a grin on my face:

I was within 10 yards of this little spike buck earlier today:

Morning stand. About eight or ten mulies were down in that draw below me:

Evening stand. Distance to the top of the skidder trail is about 225 yards, pretty much my personal limit for the .30-30 in the field:

Back at it either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday, looking for a bigger buck.

Looks like a pretty good hunt, Guy. The pictures are great, allowing us to traipse along with you. Looks as if you are seeing plenty of animals in any case.

Thanks Mike, and yes, I could have taken any of three different bucks today, one a middling sized 3x3 mule deer. But I've got bigger bucks in mind...

At least so far.

It was a GREAT day of hunting!

I didn't buy a mule deer tag this year. The mulies still haven't recovered from a disastrous winter several years back, and the whitetails, being more aggressive, are pushing the poor mulies off tradition habitat. I'll take a whitetail and call it good.

Great pics as usual Guy! So cool to be that close to an wild animal, no matter what it is.

Love to see the fog rolling through.

Great pics and I enjoy looking at that country.
It beats the normally dry desert environs I frequent.

Those little lever guns sure are a lot of fun to hunt with and shoot.
I'm really looking forward to hunting with the 1894 44 Rem Mag this year.
The Baby Big Bore.

I am breaking out my 444 for next year's deer.

There is a good chance I'll be using my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem for deer this year. It has shown itself to be very accurate, and I sighted it in this Wednesday. We will see how it does when the time comes.

I absolutely love grabbing my lever gun and hitting those high mountain draws full of good bedding cover. I like getting down in the deep draws with cover between 10 am and 2pm. You feel like your jump shootin ring tails sometimes. Its not easy to score but it is hunting at its best and you always find the deer.
