Okay I have a few and they are alright and with a good edge but.... I saw a video on field dressing and this guy was using a Havaland knife so my question is....

Why not just buy a decent $12.00 utility knife at home depot and bring along a pack of new razor blades.... or am I smoking something I shouldn't be. ;)

Thanks

So are you thinking the hair would cause a big issue when using a little utility knife blade?

Thanks Mike for pointing that out! I missed that post.

Scotty never ceases to impress me with his knowledge and knowhow!!! I was thinking of the utility knife after seeing that video but thought most would think I was off the deep end. Glad to see Scotty went off first.

I am heading to Loews tomorrow morning!
Thanks Scotty, Mike and all,

Buy a $12 Mora field knife and you'll never regret it.

I once dressed a whitetail doe with a utility knife I had in the truck(forgot my Mora at the shack). Worked OK but couldn't split the ribcage with it. Was also really hard to cut around the bunghole. The blade just isn't long enough. Worked really well to slit the belly though. Would really work well with a hooked roofing blade just like those expensive gut-hook knives. It was a hot day and I wanted to cool it down as quickly as possible. Ran across another hunter and borrowed his Buck Knife. Will never forget my Mora again!

I am a klutz who would cut my fingers off using a razor blade for dressing game. I mostly use this Boker Solingen surgical steel, top lock and carry a 3-grade steel with me. It cleans up easily too.

Steve. Get that Lowes knife in the little folding case. Has a great assortment of blades. I could not be happier. I will get a picture of mine when I get out of the treestand today. Scotty

The only thing keeping me from buying the Havolin knife is where the body of the knife is made, ROC (republic of china). I like the concept other wise and I'm still very tempted by it.

You're posting from a treestand? Man, that is some wireless setup!

The IPhone has a pretty good signal from the treestand. Pretty easy to browse the Net. I ended up just pulling my Lowes knife outta my pack and emailing a picture to him. Have good cell service around my stand can be a blessing and a curse sometimes!

Looked at the Moras. Not a bad deal as well... but I picked up one of Scotty's specials at Loews. What a deal for under $15.00.

Some excellent suggestions
Thanks all

Expensive but well worth it, look at CUTCO. knives, 3 years ago we skinned out 3 moose and several deer and it never dulled. I still use a gut hook for opening the guts cause a cutco is just to sharp. if you ever feel it is dull ship it back they sharpen it for free for life. My buudy cut him self pretty good putting his cutco back into the leather scabboard as it just sliced thru the side and his hand aswell. sharp.

IMO it has a lot to do with tradition and hunting style. Everyone should use what the like to prepare their game for the table. My father in law gave me a Norwegian Pukko in 1961 and I still carry it. The knife is very light and I have taped the sheath and knife to my suspenders for years, as that keeps it out of the way and I do not sit on it! The Norsk laminated blade holds a very good edge that I can shave with. I have a collection of hunting knives but have not carried anything but the Pukko for 50 years now.

I bought Dad a hunting knife when I was in Norway on a NATO exercise some years ago. It's quite a knife!

Guess the Vikings knew something about steel and blades...
