Hunting Season Workout

Limping around and whining about my bum knee won't get me ready. Bill, you are becoming my inspiration.

Thank you Mike for the kind words. Tenacity is the key, i just try to stay after it every day I can. Not being very smart also helps.

Mike you also have to take into consideration, that I am in recovery, you could possibly injure, yourself more, by over exerting.

Time was 47 min, this AM, no pack flat ground. A couple of more weeks, and I will be there. Then comes the pack. Have a great day all!!!!!

After breaking my tailbone three weeks ago on that Texas hog hunt, and eating a low cholesterol breakfast, I hit the stair stepper for a light workout. Due to my sloth my legs really feel it after 20 minutes.
I'll get there though.

Good job Vince, glad you are able to start up again. Remember slow & easy in no time you will be back up to speed. A little bit every day and then you can start to train harder.

Blessings,
Dan

Going for 100 miles on the bicycle today. Starting about 0930 with some friends. We will see...

I haven't been over about 60 miles on any of my rides so far this year...

Guy

Wow - the 100 miles wasn't as tough as I'd feared. We were at 90 miles, 5 hours into the ride. The other guys headed for the cars, parked about two miles away, I wanted a full 100+ miles, just for bragging rights, so I added another 10 miles or so, but at a pretty mellow pace.

Our route only took us on a few hills, and at one point I was pretty low on energy, so we stopped at a coffee stand, got some wonderful pumpkin & lemon bread (yum!) and a protein shake with a shot of espresso added. That did the trick! Lots of energy to finish the last 30 miles.

Good ride. Easily my longest so far this year.

Guy

Way to go Guy, a great accomplishment, congratulations. However be careful, that healthy eating, is way overblown.

Bill and Guy,

Way to go guys! Keep and it.

You both are an inspiration to me.

I will say this exercising thing is an experience, or lesson, in patience and frustration.
Looks like the stair stepper is out. Seems to aggravate my knees to no end. So back on the treadmill I go.

I do 20 minutes per day on the recumbent bike. Then I am on the weights for anywhere between 1hr. 30min.- 2hrs sometimes a little longer 8)!
I feel real good except my shoulders seem to ache like there is no tomorrow .

Blessings,
Dan

My doctor forbid, me to even be in a room with a stair stepper, he does not like them at all. An exercise bike or treadmill were his options, when I am unable to go outdoors. Last Dr. appointment was wednesday and he sent be on my way with a caution to not overdo, and be very careful for 3 more months. I did a 1 1/2 mile this morning with a light weight in 22 min 30 seconds then had a substantial cramp in the back of my right leg up high. I will have to slow down for a couple of days again. A wedding this next week so I will be taking it easy.

OK, back in the gym after starting and stopping since the beginning of the year
.
It seems this desire to change up my routine doesn't sit well with ol' Arthur Itis. Now I know that light weight high reps on the machines is the way to go for me. I can forget about esoteric exercise devices like the stair stepper or doing super sets but I will continue to do what ol' Arthur lets me do.
I've lost a lot of strength but I'm working to get it back. I'm also trying a home remedy for arthritis. Two avacado fruits, or whatever they are, with the seeds cut out, in a bottle of rubbing alcohol. It smells, and looks, like something the cat puked up but we will see if it helps.

Post workout, after a decent night's sleep, I can honestly say I've missed my working out.

I have a good type of soreness in my hamstrings and quads that has been absent for far too long. The knee pain has subsided a bit in it's daily persistent nagging. Tonight after shift I'll hit the gym. I'm not in there long and I'm being conscious of how hard I'm pushing myself. I was only in there for fifteen minutes last night as I'm trying hard to not overdo it. Just long enough to get my burn on and then go home. It's what worked last year so I'll stick with it. Tonight I'll likely hit the calves and abduction and adduction muscles.

Vince I am still looking for those adduction muscles myself. I find that if I spend the first fifteen to twenty minutes stretching it really helps my session. Also I am taking a sugar free Whey Isolate protein powder as well and I usually start to drink that about 1/2 way through my session.
I now can bench press my weight 8 to 10 times and then I go light with lots of reps trying to lean out my muscles.
It is all an experiment with me as I can go two or three weeks with no side effects but then for a week I can be as weak as a new born .

Blessings,
Dan

If I am to pass the fire line arduous fitness test next month, I have to carry a 45 lb. pack three miles in 45 min. I am still not hiking normally but am doing better each week. I am also stretching a lot prior to setting out. I am still having a problem with back of my right leg cramping, when I am walking at pace. While here in Hawaii I have been using a day pack, with large zip-lock bags filled with sand. I have been averaging about 4 miles a day over rolling hills. Haven't been doing any weights, because there are no opportunities near me. Home tomorrow, then back to the weights and time trials.

All,

I just started hitting the treadmill again.

My gym work has been sporadic, to say the least, due to working a lot of OT. Had my daypack on, 35 pounds, and set a sturdy pace while monitoring my heart. Thirty minutes gave me what I needed before my knee started to ache. I'll recover tomorrow, and possibly Friday, as I'm doing a double shift tomorrow. Plan to hit the treadmill again this weekend.

I have a tendency to over do things and push too hard so I really need to watch myself. Now I'll get some breakfast and get ready for an evening shift.

Vince

OK,

Worked 12 hours today. Came home tonight and hit the treadmill with a fifty pound pack. Now I'm tired. Sleep before work tomorrow. I'll just do 8 tomorrow and then 10 on Friday.

It's been hit or miss with exercise but I'm trying. We're short staffed plus I'm trying to build up some Comp Time since I burned a bunch of leave early this year with my cardiac issues.

Vince

Took Friday off from exercise as I worked some OT, partial shift, and needed the rest away from the gym. I hit the treadmill before dinner this afternoon.
Packing forty pounds in my new Kuiu pack and varying the speed and incline level for a solid forty minute march. I'll get there by hunting season. I hope you all are plugging along and doing what you can. Bill, you're the epitome of grit and determination. Keep at it bud.

Vince

Still plugging along on the treadmill with a pack on.
Set a new goal for that too. One hour with an 80 pound pack, non-stop. It'll take me some time to get there and I need to be cognizant of my physical limitations but I'll get there. Keep plugging along ya'all.

Vince
