Hunting Season Workout

That is very good, Bill. Congratulations. That is certainly better than I'd be doing at this time.

Congratulations Bill, I am sure that you will enjoy a season fighting fires (Hmm that really doesn't sound right ). I am sure that you can teach a number of things about firefighting to the young people coming up (y) it is not all in a text book .

Blessings,
Dan

OUTSTANDING!

Simply hiking 3 miles in an hour is pretty doggone good for most folks.

You're carrying 45 pounds, and doing the 3 miles in under 45 minutes... That's a brisk pace, with a hefty load.

Congrats! (y)

Guy

Thank you all. My normal pace is right at three mph, and I can easily push that down a min or two., but 5 is hard. I have done this many times and know the pace, so that helps a lot, but I was pretty tired when I finished.

Thank you for your dedication.

Most of my good buddy cops worked out hard for an hour or so right before every 12 hour shift - and we were glad of it, we could count on each other.

But there were plenty of cops who just clocked in and clocked out, and never worked out... They got paid the same, but they weren't guys you could count on when things got physical.

You're the kind of guy who as a firefighter, or if you'd been a cop, can be counted on.

Meanwhile, it helps when hunting too! (y)

Thank you Guy for the very nice thoughts. Few know that after the military I applied, interviewed, and was accepted into the Oregon State Police Academy. When I arrived for my physical, the doctor felt that I had not recovered sufficiently from my injury in Vietnam, and would not sign off on the academy. I appealed and 8 months later was approved, of course long after the academy was finished. I was promoted a couple of levels by my employer, Weyerhasuser T. Company, and by the time the next opportunity came around I passed on it. You always wonder, what if?? Thanks again for the kind words.

Shorter ride today, about an hour and fifteen minutes. Was on the mountain bike, so that was a good workout. It's heavier and I'm slower on it.

Rode to the gym, lifted for 30+ minutes, then rode the 1:15 with my bike buddies. Lovin' it! :)

Guy

Okay - this was a big one for me.

42 miles on my mountain bike this morning and 3300+ feet of gain. Feeling real good about pulling that one off, at age 62. Oooh Rah! :)

Great job, Guy outstanding.

Thanks! Today's workout was far more mild:

Keeping the hunting dog fit. We walked four miles this morning, here in town. Went down to the boat ramp on the Columbia River where ol' Clark enjoyed a swim, then walked back home before it got too warm:

18.6 miles on the mountain bike today, with a gain of 1764 feet! :) Was pretty doggone steep there for a while. I had to get off the bike and push it uphill on the dirt road for quite a ways.

Then the descent back into town was... FUN!

Well I got on the scale yesterday after my workout and I am down almost 35lbs . I have never done a weight loss this slow before but really notice that my carb cravings are not as intense.
I have 15lbs to go and then I am going to see how I feel before making the final decision. I will be changing gyms at the end of this month which is going to be a lot cheaper by almost $300.00 per year (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Dan, its sounds like your doing great, just stay the course and take your time and you will make your goals.
I meandered around on the hill above the house today 1200 foot elevation gain in the first two miles (i took the easy route) then made a circle back to the house. And ended with a nice 5.2 miles. in some good ground.

This morning, a dry 26 degrees, not much snow or ice left in town.

Walked down to the gym, lifted hard. Did 15 min on the exercise bike (really NICE bike) then walked uphill home. Total of 3 miles walking.

Lifting is going good. I have to remember to take it easy on my right shoulder. Injured on duty, fighting a violent suspect. Yes, that POS went to jail, in an ambulance. Got my shoulder repaired. Surgeon said "almost beyond repair" so I try to be careful with the lifting. Shoulder is reminding me that it's not what it used to be now. So, I'll back off a bit on the bench. Again. Dang.

Did leg press today instead of squats. I alternate between the two. I can't squat nearly as much as I can leg press. Loaded up the leg press machine with four, 100 pound weights today. Heck, it's a workout loading the machine! Sometimes I do six. Today I settled for three sets with 400. Felt good.

Lots of work on the cables. I was taught a lot of cable exercises when I was in physical therapy after getting my shoulder put back together. I use them every time I go to the gym. Without them, I might not have much strength or range of motion in that shoulder.

Did some pullups. I can't do as many as I'd like, but not bad. Don't know too many 62 year old, 220 pounders who can actually do pullups. Feeling pretty good about that.

Tomorrow the plan is to walk down to the gym (unless the weather changes for the worse) then do some stretching and a serious cardio workout. Likely 30 min on the bike and 30 min on the elliptical. I try to do cardio every Tuesday and Thursday. Weights, with a little cardio M/W/F.

Kind of addicted to exercise. Makes me feel good. Sometimes I go for a hike or a bicycle ride instead. Looking forward to cycling. Feeling good about it. Normally I shed some weight the first couple of months of warmer weather and regular bicycling.

Yup, not as good as I was, but not bad. Keep on truckin'

Way to go GUY (y) . After serious shoulder surgery a couple of years ago I am still afraid of the weights. BUT, i have committed to start again this spring. I also need to be more regular on my yoga. I am back to my daily hikes, (did 5.1) today and will get into the desert in a few days. 62 degrees here today, with strong wind.

My training is on hold while the medical people try to figure out what is going on with my elbows. They can not decide whether it is Arthritis or Tendinitis but still got a couple of test yet .
I am still waking up almost every night with the aching, but I am still walking on this side so I guess that is a good thing .
I am happy Guy that you are able to keep on the weights as that is what I really miss.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan - weights/resistance training has always been good for me. Anytime I was injured, I'd hit the weight room, lightly at first then with more and more intensity, finally healing up whatever had torn, broken, been pulled free, was weak after surgery... Whatever. Weights always helped.

I think that's part of why I enjoy cycling, x-c skiing, etc... Ya, it's cardio, but strength is also important. I like that.

Guy

A couple of weeks ago our low-altitude snow started melting away, so I started bicycling again. Five rides so far: 20 miles, 32, 32, and 32. The 32 mile rides had about a 1,000' elevation gain each.

Today was 50! with a 2300+ ft elevation gain. I kinda wore out my riding buddy. :)

Two goals in mind: 63 miles on my 63rd birthday in May, and 100 miles on June 1st at the Sunrise Rotary Century ride. :)

Feeling good.

Guy

As most know I am in Arizona for the winter, I started my morning PT hikes here on the 18 of Jan, and my tally as of yesterday was 210 miles. I am back on the weights, after a long rest, and while not doing much weight, it feels good.
