So I've been having a recurrent nightmare of sorts. I want a light, classic looking rifle; mdl 70; 20 inch barrel; I can't decide on caliber: 6.5 sweed, 7x57 or 257 Roberts.
Damn this is tough.

I vote for the Swede.
If for no other reason I have a Swedish friend. Yes, an honest to God Swede. I introduced him to his wife and he has since immigrated here.
That, the ballistics of the 6.5, and that I shoot a 6.5x284 all propel me towards the Swede from your given choices.
Given that I don't have the obligatory rifle picture I'll include a picture of various Swedish vagabonds at the wedding rehearsal dinner.

I have both a 7X57 and a 257 Bob. I love them both, but the 7X57 Featherweight is just sweeeeeeeet.

What is its use, and what calibers do you have on both sides of it?. Just how redundant is it??

A most applicable series of questions.
I admit to an affinity to all things Swede due to some very dear and close friends.
No matter which one you choose I can't help but think it will work well for you unless you want to use it as a canoe paddle. [emoji2]

...flashback to a .257 Roberts in Al Biesen's shop almost 50yrs. ago. I've never been able to forget that rifle...

The Swede and the Mauser are two of the four rifles I use most often. Very nice calibers. If voting I would vote for the Swede, because I have one, and like it--- plus my mom is a Swede.

However, I just noticed on Cheyenne's new rifle thread that Vince dont like tall, blue eyed blonds---poor mom

Seriously, the Swede is liked and used a lot more in Europe than it seems to be in the States.

I dont think you could go wrong with any of the three your choosing from.

Best Regards

Certainly classic, and classy. My favourite rifle. It fits my ideal of what a rifle should be.

I have a few 7x57's and really love the cartridge. Makes me wonder why I ever bothered with a .280 Remington. I recently picked up a CZ in 7x57. I haven't worked up any loads yet but factory ammo shoots pretty well. That being said, I've had reason over the last couple of years to try and aquire a Swede. I have a bunch of ammo I got from my Grandfathers house and need something to shoot it with. Should you find a rifle, I'd be willing to part with the ammo though.....let's say straight across for your friends sister? Swede for Swede:)

Jamila,

I never said I didn't like Swedes, or tall blondes for that matter, just that I need more than just looks, vacuous expressions, and the ability to connect with me on a mental level. Since I'm crazy the last part shouldn't be too hard. :)
What draws me to the Swede is the .264 diameter bullet and how well it works. My friends in Sweden have been knocking moose down for years with one. Most hunters, due to the pressure of the moose rounds, are relegating them to deer these days because their's a lot of older 6.5 rifles that won't handle the higher pressure.
The lady in the picture, that captured Guy's attention works a race pit crew, can hold a conversation on many matters, and understand physics to a far greater degree than I. Plus, she's friends with my bride. :D

I am thinking a 125 PT around 3000 would be a pretty fierce load that would barely nudge the shooter. I am pretty excited to try it out.

Nice recovery Vince LOL

Scotty, that is a VERY NICE rifle

Sorry salmonchaser, my apologizes for moving away from your question. As mentioned in my first post a Swede like the one Scotty posted a picture of would be a sweet rifle to own. However I enjoy the 7 x 57 as well, between those two it would be a tough choice for me, if I had to chose just one. Best of luck with whichever you chose

Best Regards

well, I've got the tall blonde, she can shoot too. She is mostly Norwegian, with just a touch, 1/32, Nez Pearce. Explains a few things! I'm short in the middle range, jumping from 243 to O6. Yeah the featherweight mdl 70 would do. Topped with an old VXII in 2x7, or similar scope, just about perfect for hiking a ridge for the walk, popping a deer or a song dog if it feels right. 6.5 or 7x57. Time to start shopping.
If always thought I wanted a 280, but it doesn't have quite the same appeal.

SC, the 7x57 and 6.5 Swede really are about the same in my eyes. I got my son a Model 70 Featherweight 7x57 and I found this 6.5 Swede for my daughter. While not everything sorta rifles, they do cover a whole lot of hunting. I really enjoy shooting the 7x57 though. It is a fabulously accurate rifle that does shoot 150 PT's really well. I had no trouble pushing that bullet up over 2850 in his rifle carrying MOA off a pack out to 500 yards. I was very impressed with the cartridge.

I think the 6.5 Swede will do just as well with a 125 PT I believe. Like I said, I am looking forward to working with the Swede. Lapua brass in a good rifle, set up with a good bullet sounds like a really great set up for exactly what your talking about using it for. I'd be just fine with my daughter carrying it for elk with me sitting beside her and keeping the ranges moderate..
