I think I need.

SC, the 7x57 and 6.5 Swede really are about the same in my eyes. I got my son a Model 70 Featherweight 7x57 and I found this 6.5 Swede for my daughter. While not everything sorta rifles, they do cover a whole lot of hunting. I really enjoy shooting the 7x57 though. It is a fabulously accurate rifle that does shoot 150 PT's really well. I had no trouble pushing that bullet up over 2850 in his rifle carrying MOA off a pack out to 500 yards. I was very impressed with the cartridge.

I think the 6.5 Swede will do just as well with a 125 PT I believe. Like I said, I am looking forward to working with the Swede. Lapua brass in a good rifle, set up with a good bullet sounds like a really great set up for exactly what your talking about using it for. I'd be just fine with my daughter carrying it for elk with me sitting beside her and keeping the ranges moderate..

I have a few 7x57's and really love the cartridge. Makes me wonder why I ever bothered with a .280 Remington. I recently picked up a CZ in 7x57. I haven't worked up any loads yet but factory ammo shoots pretty well. That being said, I've had reason over the last couple of years to try and aquire a Swede. I have a bunch of ammo I got from my Grandfathers house and need something to shoot it with. Should you find a rifle, I'd be willing to part with the ammo though.....let's say straight across for your friends sister? Swede for Swede:)
Lefty, she, the blonde Swedish gal in the picture, says I need to hold out for a slingshot too. :)

I'm going to look at the ballistics again and see if the short barrel will influence my choice.

My do it all rifle, serious deer hunter, or if I ever get the chance at another big horn will be my 06. The ballistics of my light rifle are some what secondary, simply need to be adequate. I packed more than a few mulies mom whacked with the 257 Bob, so any of the three will work, though I think the 6.5 is the most interesting. I just stopped by my local gun shop to order Sande the new Glock .380 for a back-up at work. The owner is heading to the shot show soon to place his orders for the year. He said he'll see what he can find.

You won't be sorry about that G42. Bought one for my wife and it's the most accurate 380 I've shot.

FWIW, either the 6.5 or the 7. Nothing at all wrong with the Bob, just the other two punch a little harder.

Vince, I'm ashamed to admit, Guy wasn't the only one to key in on that picture.

So I've been having a recurrent nightmare of sorts. I want a light, classic looking rifle; mdl 70; 20 inch barrel; I can't decide on caliber: 6.5 sweed, 7x57 or 257 Roberts.
Damn this is tough.

Just my not very humble $0.02. 7x57. I have the M70 FWT in .257 Bob and 7x57 and I'd just forget the extra 2" of barrel on the FWT. I've loaded the 140 gr. Ballistic Tips to 2800 FPS in mine with W760 and it puts five just under a nickel. I did reach 2880 FPS with that powder but bolt lift was getting a tad sticky. I'll admit it was a bit over 100* that day. That rifle is getting to be a favorite. Reasonably powerful up to elk. Doesn't kick the slats out from under me noe weight my fat butt down. What's not to like?

Ain't nothing to be ashamed of.

My eyes about bugged out of my head when she walked over and introduced herself. I was the best man at the wedding and she wanted to meet me. She smokes cigarettes but didn't have any handy. I offered her some Copenhagen and she said, "I love you." [emoji2]

My wife just chuckled and said, "Oh Lord." It's a good thing she knows I ain't going to roam because I ain't. Mimmi bummed Copenhagen off me all weekend and was a hit with all the dance hall cowboys.

As for the 6.5 vs the 7mm.

Both are great but I'm still inclined to favor the Swede even with the slightly shorter barrel after a little research. The 7mm is just too close to the 30-06 in my opinion and I really like the various 6.5 variations.

I put a couple rifles in the safe over the years for the kids (2 boys and a girl) should they want to hunt
2 - M70 featherweights in 7x57
2 -Tikka T3 in 6.5 Swede with extra wood stocks to cut down.
And a Remington M7 in 7mm-08 with an adult and youth stock.

Figure between these rifles, something will fit them

All the calibers will do the job. If they need bigger....then i have a few Whelens in the safe too

I was baby sitting my two year old granddaughter this afternoon when Sande rolled in from work. I had the Winchester website up which prompted the question " why do you need another rifle"? for Piper, I quickly responded. "What makes you think she wants to go hunting?" Watch this, hey Piper, want to go hunting? Boom, down goes Mickey and Miney, she grabs her coat and is jumping up and down at the door.
I'm so golden.

That's what we like to see--anticipation. You're moving in the right direction, Eric. (y)

Eric, now that is a cool bunch of rifles for them kids!

SC, very awesome. Sounds like your grooming a new elk hunting partner. Way to go!

I am of course a little biased but this little girl is really something. She is equally happy watching Frozen or following the dogs around the property. Can't wait until trout season opens.

Mine is not as nice, nor as light as what you have in mind but.......I'll vote Swede OR 7x57

My recent oh-so-cheap-I-could-not-help-it M96 Mannlicher that someone put a lot of time and money into. SHORT barrel at 18.5". Muzzle blast will be less than user friendly but for a "meat gun".....I'll take it.

I also dumbed into a Douglas SS 7x57 23.5" barrel already threaded for a 700 and turned to Rem contour.......so I guess that one is next. *grin* (That one will be SWEET! IMHO)

Did you say a Swede???
