Idaho Non-Resident Fee Increase

Governments are hungry for money, so I suppose it is not unreasonable for us hunters to be tagged for more money. The fees appear high, but in light of the requirement in BC to use a licensed guide, they are not outrageous, I suppose. Still, it does put hunting on any regular basis out of reach of non-residents.

The increase is about $50 a tag. If you're going that far to hunt an extra $150 or so isn't too bad. As it was the out of state elk tag in Idaho used to cost about the same as a resident elk tag in Kalifornia.

It is becoming a rich ma's sport slowly...like Germany! :x

Just an FYI, the Idaho DFG's only source of income is the sale of licenses and tags. No money from taxes are given to the ID DFG. I guess some other states' Fish & Game Dept. may receive some money from tax revenues....?

Idaho Fish and Game has kept the tag prices pretty low compared to most other states and over the counter (for the most part) bull elk and mule deer available in most areas. One year my hunting partner had a deer tag and I had deer and elk tags. On day 4 we both had deer down and he simply went to town and bought an elk tag so he could keep hunting. He got a shot at a nice 5 point bull the next day. It's nice not having to buy all the tags ahead of time.

I suspect the information about funding for the Idaho F&G is only partly correct. While they may receive no state tax dollars, I suspect they are flush with Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funds from federal excise taxes on the goods we purchase to pursue hunting or fishing sports, respectively. All state game agencies are. That said, expect continued license fee increases as time passes, and governments are called on more and more to do things that are for the most part well outside their constitutional scope, or at least outside the original intent of those who framed the national and state constitutions.

As Thoreau wrote in Resistance to Civil Government (commonly referred to as Civil Disobedience), "That government is best which governs least."

Man, I know it is not much in the grand scheme and Idaho has been relatively good for awhile, that is still a pretty good jump. Either way, both the wife and I are headed to Idaho the last week of May to hunt bear with my buddy. Should be a good time and worth the money. Heck, our plane tickets for the trip are 700.00, so nothing is really cheap! It is nice to buy OTC elk tags though and elk are pretty well represented in alot of areas the average hunter can get too. Scotty

I bought my non-res tags early, my son lives in ID and gave me a heads-up about the expected price increase. However, would have paid just about any price to hunt in his back yard with him...

Where abouts in Idaho are you going for bear?

We will be hunting around McCall. Not sure what the closest area to our hunting gorunds is, maybe Yellowpine? Scotty
