I'm up to six now!

Well let me know what your in the market for! I'll probably be letting go of this one soon:

I was going to use the stock for my SS barreled action however I sent the money off today for a Mickey Edge inletted for a FWT and no bottom metal. Slightly used and bedded so I got a good price and it has the aluminum trigger guard and SS sling swivels. Going to have to remove some of the old bedding and re-skim it but I got it for a little over $200 less than a new one! ;)

Well, if you have 6 people in the house, I'd say you have the right number of '06's.
Now you just need to make sure everyone has an AR as well.

My wife and daughter can't handle the recoil of the 06. My daughter will probably get there my wife doesn't want to try. One AR is hard enough to feed without a progressive press!

My wife is a little delicate 110 pound lady. After following the recommendations here on the board, I got her a 7mm-08 and she shoots 120 gr BTs. Little recoil and she loves it.

My wife has no interest in rifles really, loves hand guns and the AR. She doesn't want to shoot anything other than paper and steel. Now the Daughter loves to shoot everything pistol, rifle, shotgun, and bow wants desperately to hunt but she is nine and can't hunt anything but small game in Colorado. Going to OK with her .223 to get a whitetail around Thanksgiving, she got offers a free youth hunt by my buddies father on his property.

Interesting topic, to be sure. I am in my 60's and just recently bought my first 30-06. Even at that, I did not want the rifle for the caliber, but because it is a beautifull Winchester Super Grade that Winchester is offering to celebrate 75 years of making the model 70. Great looking rifle, and yes, I have shot it instead of just hiding it in the safe.

Having said that, I see no problem with having multiple rifles in the same caliber. I own two 22-250 Remingtons, two 7-08 Remingtons, and two 300 WSM rifles. I have even convinced myself that they all have their own special place in the scheme of things.

The main reason I'm thinking the way I am is because I have to move a household. I only hunt with a couple of my rifles but I shoot most of them. Figure since I moving and I have 30+ rifles it is a good time to simplify things a bit.

6? You have catch up to do yet!

I have 8...yes, 8, 30-06 rifles.

:D

Tom,

Way too many 30-06s. You may need to send one or two up this way for me to work with.

Mike, I think so. To be serious for just a moment, it might be that it needs to be let to cool completely between groups. I have let it cool till it was just a little warm to the touch before starting anew with the next group. Might need to be COLD?

I was messing with the torque of the fore end screw, and fully tightened, it gave me an honest inch, I would guess (didn't measure yet). I was ecstatic. Gave it a good cooling interval, a little warmth on the chamber end of the barrel, shot the same load again....2-2.5 inches. Dang!

OK, backed that fore end screw out a full turn. Shot a group. 1". Ok, good. Cooled similarly, it gave 1.5"+.

Honestly, I could hunt it as it is, I just hoped for better. It is hitting about a half inch low at 100 now. I guess I could just load up the ammo, dial the Minox up about 2 1/2 minutes, and call it good.

Come to think of it, six isn't so tough to get to:

Military collectables:
- M1903 Springfield
- M1917 American Enfield
- M1 Garand (Bonus points for a M1D)

Sporting rifles:
- Win 70 featherweight super grade in 30-06.. It's a classic, you're almost obligated to have one as an American male.
- High end hunting rifle (you pick.. synthetic, composite stock, stainless...)

- Throw in that sporterized mauser bring back from WWII that an uncle/grandfather passed along

Six is easy... Don't start worrying until they need their own safe. :)

Down to two now! Just dropped two rifles off at the GS. Barrel is getting replaced on one and the other is going into that Edge stock I was talking about. Leaves me with just a Stevens 200 and a Win M70 SS Classic when all is said and done. The Stevens is still for sale in the classifieds if anyone wants it.
