Nice Mauser. If you're sticking with the scout setup, I'd leave the barrel alone. Is that stock glass bedded? If not that might tighten your groups a tick. I love the #1 German reticle too. For lighter game, this one works very well on Whitetail size critters http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/pro ... ctId/11763
If you were to rebarrel, since you live in big bad critter country, 9.3x62 will fit that action, although you may be a bit restricted with some of the heavier bullets. .358win, .358 Norma, .350 Rem, would also be options with room to breathe, the latter 2 will require bolt face and mag well smithing. .30-284 would also be interesting. The M48 mag well is built to accommodate the sS military load that is a bit longer than book 8x57 COL. I have a K98 sporter with the same mag dimensions that will fit a .280rem with some caveats. High BC 160 and heavier must be seated deeply. I can run 160 flat base and 175 rn out to the proper length.
