I'm looking at how to better use a sling to shoot from field positions. Any one know of or have a video they can send a link to or directions with pictures (sorry visual learner mostly).

Corey

Guy Miner has a good write up on using a sling. Get a hold of him, and maybe he'll post it up for all of us to read, again.

I sent Corey a copy of the old article I wrote - but didn't have the photos attached.

Will see if I can update that article, and include some photos as well. The sling can be a great assist in the field. Too many guys think it's for "those target shooters" only, but it was intended to be a shooting aid. Still works if a guy learns how to use it.

Meanwhile, MSgt Jim Owens at www.jarheadtop.com has a real good CD avail with great instructions on sling assembly and use as well as instruction on the shooting positions. It's intended for target shooters, but adaptable for the field as well. You'll want "Leather Sling and Shooting Positions" from his web site.

Guy

Thank you very much Guy that gives me a starting point. About all I know how to do is a hasty sling. I've been feeling that I'm missing something by not learning how to use the sling. Not looking foward to buying new slings but that is the way it is.

Corey

I like the look of the clip in synthetic sling. Might have to look in that one for sure. I like leather but it gets slick when wet.

Corey

Leather also absorbs human, oil and a lot of other scent that a deer can smell a long way. The synthetics may also collect some of these scents but are not nearly as absorbent and can be thrown in the washing machine.

He has some great books, too......Turner Slings sells his stuff, as well as some top-notch slings.

It is a nice skill to know how to use a sling properly. Just using a good hasty slings makes my shot groups much more consistent. I don't see myself ever getting down and making a loop sling, but I guess if I had the time, I could whoop it out quick enough. Scotty

Scotty, with the old leather sling set up properly, it takes about two shakes of a lambs tail to get a loop sling going.

Okay, maybe three shakes.

I've used the loop sling on several mule deer over the years, from sitting mostly, but also prone. As you've noted, the hasty sling can be pretty doggone good too - but I'm addicted to the loop, no doubt.

I could use some coaching on technique with the sling. I was shooting a couple weeks ago and was having an awfuul time with the sling pulling my shots off. Need to brush up on my technique. Hope guy can post his article. Been having some trouble with my shoulder and tendonitis in my hand lately. Need all the help I can get. CL
