range report!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing would make me happier.... But I'm stuck at work today for about 10 hours. Tomorrow I'm hopeful but weather is a bit iffy and I don't belong to a range, so it's either shoot in the rain and mud or wait. Impatience will likely get the better of me and I'll shoot regardless... But it's less enjoyable and groups suffer.

Thanks for the lead Joel. Just what I need.... More places to spend money at!

My job sucks....I've got a 10 hour day today (day 6 for week) that I don't get paid a dime for even though it's beyond my normal work week! I can't wait to start my career in law enforcement.... Cause this crap just sucks!

Hey Tim, that is one beautiful rifle you had put together looking forward to the range reports with photos of course

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks Dan. Don't worry, I'm planning on a detailed report once I actually get out to do some shooting! I've got some work up loads with the Berger's loaded and will load the amax tonight after work. Then I just need to get the scope mounted and I'm ready to burn some powder!

I tried to find the Berger hybrid as well but they seem to be pretty scarce.

This is my local "crack dealer", and it appears that he has them in stock.

Man, Joel, if I lived near there I would be in so much trouble...

Kurt - it is a good thing I don't have a wife to question my spending. The GunStop got about $3000 of my money this year with all the stuff needed for shooting F-class. John is a great guy that is one of the few dedicated retail reloading stores that you can walk in off the street and buy everything you see in his on-line store. What reloading store that you go to stocks dies like 6.5WSM, 22X47L, 6X284, etc... I found a new place to buy powder in JD338's neck of the woods, but most items I buy locally.

I sent IdahoCTD a message and had him make me a muzzle brake for my rifle. He contoured it and shipped it the same day I sent him the measurement on my barrel at an awesome price. Got it today and screwed it on just to see where it lined up prior to timing and it was about a 1/4 turn off. I sent him a message thanking him for the brake and mentioned how it lined up. He replied that I could try flat sanding it and only needed to remove about .010" to get it to line up. I spent about 10 minutes with a piece of sandpaper on the garage floor and he saved me $60 to have my gunsmith do it for me! I can't recommend him enough...just awesome customer service! And now I get to shoot it braked tomorrow!

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. It's late and I'm to tired to get out the camera!

I'll be starting with the 140 amax and Berger target vld. For powder I'm going with H4831sc to start with since I have a bunch of it. Hopefully working up to around 46.5 grains. The smith that built it says to try 46.5-47 grains of either 7828ssc or H4831sc with the 139 scenars as that load has been awesome in the rifles he's done with this reamer, but I don't have any scenar bullets and nobody local carries them. So I'll try these and if they don't work then I'll order some scenar's.
just don't use scenars hunting, terminal performace sux pond scum. but they are wonderfully accurate!

Well, mine's giving me the boot after almost six months of wedded f'ing bliss. So when I get back on my feet from being unemployed and moving out, I'm sure he'll be getting a pretty sizable order from me.

Darn Kurt. Sorry to hear that buddy. Hope you get sorted out quick.

I got the scope installed and in the process of doing so discovered a couple of things.

#1 I hate mounting scopes....something about the whole process always leaves me thinking I don't have things quite lined up, but I think I may have found a decent way to do it. I first used a level on top of the rail to level the rifle. Then after setting the eye relief on the scope came time to get the reticle set up perfectly vertical. I remembered I had a self leveling laser level that projects both vertical and horizontal lines or both....so I set it up and projected a crosshair pattern on the wall. I set the rifle up behind it and sighted the rifle looking down the bore so that the center of the laser reticle was centered looking down the bore. Then I put the scope on top and rotated until the reticle lined up perfectly with the laser. After doing so I set the level on top of the M5 turret and it also read level. I think it's good to go!

#2 I purchased a vortex bubble level anti-cant device to mount to the scope. I've never used one of these before and I learned something very valuable....I should have been! I discovered that when I naturally mount the rifle that I cant it clockwise a significant amount! And come to think of it when shooting long range, most of my misses are to the right side of the target...and there have been several times when I'm reading wind from right to left and end up putting no wind hold on the scope to get a hit, otherwise I'm missing to the wind side. I think I've discovered the problem....the nut behind the scope!

It's going to take A LOT of practice to get to the point where holding the rifle straight up and down according to the level feels natural.... But I'm hoping that my wind reading skills are going to significantly improve now that I'm not fighting my stupidity along with the wind!

Also, after getting everything mounted, my rifle + scope and bipod weighs a hair over 14 pounds without ammo. Should be plenty stable for some long range shooting! Now I just need to find someone to pack it for me....

Here's a few quick pics with everything mounted and ready to go.

Sorry to hear that Kurt....I hope everything turns around for you soon!

Scotty, Tim, thanks, fellas. We'll see. She never really was hip to my shooting/hunting bent (though she ate the heck out of my elk summer sausage), and I'm tired of cleaning up after her. And truth be told, even though she claimed she liked SIG P226/228s, I think she is afraid of guns. She certainly whines about the amount of space in the garage devoted to it (though it's less than the amount of space taken up by her boxes of books, papers, old clothes, and unused sports equipment that since we have moved in has only been touched by me trying to clear some room)... and I don't even have my waterfowl decoys in the garage!

Kurt, Mike says getting old is not for sissies, and I kinda think I adapted the thought of, "being married is not for sissies"! Plus, your an old codger like me and are set in your ways, so adapting to another isn't easy. Good luck buddy.
