I don't know if this is the spot to post this but I am really finding there are some jerks in the world. My mother in law had a guy come over to give her a price on my father in laws rifle collection. I did some quick math and came up with 15K. She had a guy come in and offer her $5,000. He put down $300 for one of the Browning Medalions with a Leupold VXIII on it. I told her to sit on them until Christmas and we can talk about the value of the collection. It sucks that people are trying to rake her over the coals after her husband past away.

I call em vultures.
A good deal is one thing, taking advantage of unprepared people is reprehensible IMO.
You gave her good advice.

Afraid the world is full of such people....it is a sad commentary on humanity. Makes you appreciate those who are honest and upstanding.

Absolutely! Taking advantage like that!

Sell them on here man!

Some people will try anything to make a dollar. Sorry to see that people just don't care anymore .
I hope that everything turns out right!

Blessings,
Dan

Yep. I'll buy a good deal from a guy who knows what he's selling. Offer a lowball to someone who doesn't know any better so I can make a quick buck? Nah- there's a place in hell for people like that.

I have a soft spot in my heart for widows who are selling their late husband's tools or toys. She is vulnerable, and we are obligated to show compassion.

It was a guy that owns a sport shop some where near the town she lives in. I am trying to set something up with her so I can buy some of them from her but she wants none of that. I can have them but I can't pay for them. I told her that it was not going to work that way. I will tell her about selling them on here and see what she says.

If you sold them on here, she does not have to know which ones you buy. It's easy to send yourself a money order... ;)

WT, you struck a soft spot with this one. My older brother worried my father into sell him a Pre WWII M70 in 30-06 for $300.My father was dieing at the time. The rifle had already been gifted to my son as his inheritance and had already been transferred into my custody for safe keeping.
There are all kinds of predators in this world and they all are not four legged. :x

Take the guns, sell the ones you do not want, and "help her out" every week using the proceeds of the sale.

The world is full of opportunist.
Maybe you can put a inventory list together and let your friends here help you get their value.
There might even be some that would be of interest. The fellas here would have far more appreciation and the history of your FIL and his guns.

If she is serious about selling, there is an auction house on my side of the river I routinely use to sell "extra" guns. They are called Lampi auctioneers in Annandale Mn. Every gun I have sold there has brought significantly more than I would have gotten at a gunshow, or about the same as high-end retail after commission. I guess people at auctions like to win. I've done especially well with vintage collectable guns, handguns and politically incorrect rifles. People at their auctions like to win and Cabelas allegedly sends a rep to bid in order to drive up the local prices on used guns.

The only caveat is with high-end shotguns or contemporary sporting boltguns. Those tend to go for a bit of a bargain there. They charge a 10% sellers commission and are trustworthy and prompt with payment. They are an FFL so cross state transfer is not a problem. They have a couple of sporting auctions each year that draw more SERIOUS cash buyers than any gunshow. 2 years ago I saw a guy shell out over 150 Franklins for an antique Winchester.

I would sell any fine modern sporters on here.

I told Mom if it was up to me , she'd give them all away to people Dad cared about. There's an outfit here in town that alledgedly looks through the Obits for potential sellers.....  CL

few thoughts:

-ask your mother to let you take care of dispursing the guns whether it be private sales, an auction, or giving some with some sentimental value to relatives or his old hunting buddies (and if they choose to give your mother some cash for them great but not expected) then giving your mother the proceeds

- ask your mother to send you pics of a couple rifles, post the pics for those on here to see and show her the thread of what some estimate their value at, other forums might not be as good but this one seems to have honest people that will tell you fair values without over/under inflating

My mom got fleeced buy some vulture's in Florida. By the time the family stepped in she had advance Alzheimer's and they cleaned her out.
