Kimber 84 35 Whelen

There is a fair few Model 70s floating around Alaska made up from shot out pre 64s in 35 Whelen and I have admired them for over 30 years ! An old fella that moved here to Maine; from Pa has one that a gunsmith made up for him in 1979 with a Douglas barrel on it! NICE job looks custom as the guy had a nice stamp made up by an engraver, with his last name on it,[VanPatten] and the caliber in a cool looking slanted letters! If the gun was restocked with some decent Walnut it would be a show stopper; but it just has the standard grade original stock on it. If I can ever get it away from him; I may dive into it, and will a great piece of walnut; and checker it up in custom shop original pattern to make it look factory. I have access to a couple of custom shop guns I could snag the patterns off from! I got my fingers crossed; and I am pretty sure he will offer it to me in the end. I will NOT even entertain thoughts of one of these Kimbers; as I know myself to well; and would most certainly not be able to resist one in the Whelen, so am not even going to look at them ........................ besides Scotty has assured me that he will send his up to me anytime I want to use it and that is going to be just as soooooon as he can find a new home for that old 700 push feed he is lugging around at the moment!

I know that 35 Whelen was one offering from the USRA Custom Shop. I would like to see FN begin to promote rifles from a renewed Custom Shop.

Same here. All this talk about the 35 Whelen in a CRF or M70 has kinda sparked me a little. I am kinda thinking about selling the CDL and seeing if the proceeds would be enough to get me into a good donor or at least, a decent downpayment on the Kimber. Not sure yet. I may stick the CDL up for sale and see what it gathers for looks. Then go from there. It shoots really well and is a great rifle, but I am kinda too much of a Winchester kid....

I love a Winchester as much as you do Scotty but I am here to tell you that KIMBER will soon take your heart like a spotted puppy tied to red wagon, jumpin up and down with sad eyes, barking "pick me ,pick me!" LOL......................

That is what I am scared of!

Now, Scotty. Buy a Winchester Featherweight chambered in 30-06, screw a Pac-Nor 14 twist 35 calibre barrel onto it and you have your Winchester 35 Whelen. Once I have all my ducks in a row, I may do something similar. Then, it won't a a spotted puppy tied to that red wagon, but a genuine adorable mutt that cannot be resisted.

Thats the plan Mike. I think that would be pretty slick and an awesome rifle for hunting. I hate when this kinda stuff happens to my brain. May have to get some pictures of the 35 Whelen up soon. If you know anybody looking for a Whelen, send them my way. Scotty

It may be my next project, just 'cause. Of course, I'm still waiting for my Ruger. Any day now, any day now. When you see how good my 9.3X64 looks, you'll be chomping at the bit to get the project going.

I know. Again, that is the issue Mike. I think a new Featherweight could be had for around 600-650 and then another 550 to get any style PacNor I want put on and trued up. That is really about the same as buying a Kimber straight up... I have a little soul searching to do yet. I am not worried about the black cloud over at Kimber, they are pretty good to me regarding the 1911's, so I think if I had an issue, I could get it taken care of....

Plus, I gotta see if the Remington will move as well..

Yeah, Scotty, but then you have a Kimber! That will never do, Marine!

Man, you are really making it tough for a young Marine! Just the thought of a 35 Whelen in a Featherweight stock makes me a little giddy.....

I gotta think this one through a little... Figures, I just zeroed the Minox on the CDL the other day and it shot excellent... Man, it is really hard to give up a rifle that shoots so well..

Drop over, and I'll rig up the Brenneke for you to shoot. Then, you'll rush out and buy that Featherweight as a donor... I have a stock for you, if you have an action. I may even have a spare tube lying around.

Scotty ,
If you dont stop fooling around and jack that old pushfeeder; and get with the program; I am going to just go do it; and grab that Swarvoski scope I showed you yesterday to ride up ontop of the Kimber! And you are going to be sucken hind tet; big time lad........................ dont say I didnt warn you marine..................... now front and center!

I'm not one to slow down gun lust, but you have a rifle that shoots well, you are comfortable with, and is pretty dang accurate. Why do you want to move it? Yeah, I know, it's one of the dreaded Remingtons, but it's a pretty danged good Remington.

Now if you want a second Whelen, that I perfectly understand.

I've thought a time or two of doing just that with a Sporter, but not a Featherweight. Don't know why.

Actually, at the last minute, I opted to go with a Sporter for my Brenneke. For that reason, I still have a long-action Featherweight stock begging to be used.

Man, you are not helping any at all Mike! Jeeze!

We shall see what happens.

Kurt, I like the Whelen because it shoots so well and is an easy carrying rifle. I don't believe I would have something like a M70 give me trouble. It just wouldn't be normal

We shall see what happens. I would love to have two, but I don't need them at all... We shall see, if mine sells, then good, if not, then good too, I haven't put a dime out to list it.. Scotty

Slowly slowly slippin away................

Scotty,

Man o man, that is just what you need. You don't have to mess with a rebarreled project. Its ready, set, go...
What are you waiting for?

I'm going through the same thought process myself Scotty I could build but I would want a fiberglass stock and stainless steel which isn't always easy to find in left hand guns. Just got word though that there is a LH version of the Nosler TGR coming hopefully next year and possibly a short action LH as well. Now that could be a great combo for me together with the 375 Ruger, shoot a 300 gr PT in the 375 and a 225 gr AB in the Whelen. The blind magazine of the TGR would be most welcome on a mountain gun and I could live with the crome moly steel since it's coated with Cerakote. Time to start saving pennies

Getting a Model 70 rebarreled sounds like a good plan for you Scotty you just need to decide what barrel you would want.
