Kimber...Mt. Ascent in .270WIN.

Finally saw one of these in my local hook and bullet the other day.

Wow- a 5lb 2oz rifle is light. It makes my 7.5lb .300WSM feel like a bloated pig and even makes my 6.6 lb Scout feel chunky.

So this Mt. Ascent was in .270WIN and had a brake installed out front...which seems weird on something like the .270.

I'm mulling this over because I frankly like light rifles and I like the .270 in the mountains- my recently departed one weighed something like 9 lbs so it got little hunt time but I gotta ask if this is just too little of a good thing?

It seems it would be hard to settle down off hand with so little up front and I even believe the shooting it from bags or over a backpack would take some adjustment to keep the front end from wiggling everywhere. Just looking for advice from the good folks out there. Probably get one decent rifle purchase this year and this one is at the top of the price range I'd consider... (also under consideration are the Nosler Patriot or Outfitter in a few different chambers to weed through later). My experience with Kimber has been a mixed bag in the past- some excellent and some not so much...so that weighs a bit heavy too.

With a Leupold 6x36 in Talley lightweights you should be just under 6 lbs. I'm like you and wonder how hard the thing would be to shoot in the field.

I suspect it could be pretty lively when you pull the trigger. However, that is the reason for the brake.

I find my regular Kimber right on the edge of being shootable...by that I mean I have to concentrate a little more on technique than with my fat barreled Swift or .204 varmint rifles. I think the Mountain Ascent might be too hard to settle down.

Plus, it's butt-ugly.

I still want to get regular Montanas in .280AI, 7-08, and .243.

I am with the other guys here. I think it is too light for accurate shooting. I really think, at least looking at the specs, the Patriot looks like a great start for a mountain rifle. I am really eye balling the Patriot in a 260 Remington. It seems like it would be a very nice all around shooting rifle and still portable enough to hike with.

What about the Melvin Forbes UL rifles? Those seem fairly reasonable in price as well.

I think the Patriot would make a great mountain rifle just like my M48 Sporter does....just heavy enough to settle down but not so heavy to prohibit packing around all day.

I'm fascinated by all the really amazing lightweight rifles available now but none of them I've fooled with really shot all that great. I think once a guy figured it out it would be no more or less accurate but they are more sensitive to hold and hold for sure.
