Knives that have worked for you.

I have a Damascus everyday carry, neck knife, fixed blade by Erik Fritz and a Damascus Hunter model for bigger chores.
Looking to add a dedicated Damascus Skinner and Filet knife to the menagerie.

Count me among the legion that carry a buck 110 folder. It's dressed every animal I've ever taken and some that I haven't while helping friends. I got it as a graduation present from my step-father. He had it engraved with my name, school and graduation date. I know that there are a lot of steels out there that run circles around 440 stainless, but it sure is special to me.
I ordered two knife kits for the kids from a company out of Texas. They use the new S30V wonder steel. I cut the antler tips off of the first elk I ever killed, a B & C rag horn, and am going to use them for for handles. I know how much I enjoy using my knife and I thought they might feel the same if dear ol' dad made them their hunting knives using antler from his first elk. I kicked around trying to get a friction forged D2 blank from diamondblade, but wound up going with S30V for its better rust resistance and it was one hell of a lot cheaper. Now I need to get around to making those knives!

Joe I bet your kids will love that "special knife" from dad. See this forum has you almost jump started on your project. It's all the boost that you needed so get going sir!! :)

David,
You're right. I need to get off my duff and make those knives already. A side note though, did you ever move on that 7mm?

No not yet. I'm still working on my .280 plans. I truly am hoping that sometime early summer I met get on it and get it rolling.

David,
Savor that build in your head and let it brew 'till summer. Half the fun is just putting it together in your head! I'm sure it's going to be perfect for your next goat/mule deer hunting adventure up high in the backcountry.

Ran across a guy that teaches blacksmithing/knifemaking classes in SE Portland, and I'm thinking about going. Mention of BBQ and beer might have perked my interest as well...

Kurt that would be a fun class. There are several sites you can go on the internet and order "kits" that are basically knives cut to different shaped blades and you can pick a style that fits you or your desires, and then you can also order different handle materials. Then you just finish it up the way you like. I've thought that might be kind of fun to do that as well. What do you think Kurt??

I'm thinking about at least going to a class. Whether it goes further than one class is another matter. The last thing I need is another expensive, space-intrusive hobby, though...

David,
Thanks for the kick in the ass that I needed to get these going! This is after a lot of time with the dremel to get the handle shaped the way I wanted. CPM S30V is no joke and took awhile with the grinder to shape. Now to just find a band saw to split these antlers and a belt sander to make 'em flush.

Looking very nice Joe. I can't wait to see how they turn out!! Nice blade shapes by the way.

Thanks bud. I like a good point to pierce the belly of an elk to get the cut started and like a good sweep to the blade for skinning. I was thinking D2 originally, but went with S30V for a little more corrosion resistance. This is about the best shape I've found that I like to combine both.

Check out BIRDOG FORGE. Bruce is a family friend, and makes one hell of a blade. I have a couple of his knives. I've trusted my life with his blades. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... 5948,d.cWc
From what I saw on his web page he makes a nice looking knife.
While going threw my Mothers kitchen ware I found and old friend I had forgot about. An Ontario Knife co 6 inch butcher knife that I bought and used as a teenager for for my first hunting knife. My Mother had confiscated it and used it when I wasn't sneaking it out of the house when I went fishing and hunting. Sometimes I would forget to put it back in the utensil drawer and she would ask me where it was and as usual it was in my hunting coat in the home made pouch I had made for it out of leather work shoe tongues.

TD, he makes an awesome knife. They seem to stay sharp for forever too! I have a nice belt knife that he made for me to carry in Iraq. I decided when I got home that I would see how many deer I could gut, including chopping the pelvic bone, before it needed sharpened. I gutted number nine last year and still used the same knife to skin it out!

Really like my Kershaw folders with S30V steel.

It's supposed to be the wondersteel of the decade. Any feedback to how it takes and holds an edge? I hope it works out well for the kiddos!
