Load suggestions for a .30-30 Marlin?

Couldn't help it. The poor thing was gathering dust on the rack of a local gun shop... Scarred, battered, neglected... For a bit over $200 it is now mine. I've got a winter project ahead getting it refinished and shooting well again.

It's a beat up, dirty, old pre-safety .30-30 Marlin. I haven't had a .30-30 in about 25 years. See it as a modest range deer & black bear rifle.

Everyone should have at least one lever gun, and it had as well be a 30-30. Congratulations. I'll look forward to seeing it when you are finished with working on it over the winter. Consequently, the metal looks good from the picture.

A little TLC will work wonders on at appearance.

Back in the day, I loaded some 30-30 rounds with 150 gr bullets and IMR3031. I would give Varget a try. Nothing wrong with either the 150 gr or 170 gr SPCL bullets either.

Well you got a good buy. I'm loading Hornady 150 gr. RN with 34 grains of H4895 powder for my two son's and grandson. I'm supposedly cranking out 2390 FPS. The old marlins are nice and later on ,I might look around for a Win. model 94 if I can find one at the local gun show when it comes to town. looking forward how it looks when your winter prodject is finished.

Nice lever gun Guy. Ya got to have at least one 30:30 to have an all american gun cabinet. As far as load ideas go I,ve used lots of IMR-4064 with 170 core-loks as well as H-4895. Both powders give excellent results in my marlins-336,s. Also H-4895 has been impressive with Hornady,s FTX bullet. Nice velocity and accuracy. After checking the velocity of factory ammo in my rifle I found that I could match there velocity without a problem with the above mentioned powders.

Any point to using the 170 gr Round Nose Nosler Partition that appears to be made just for the .30-30 cartridge?

Or is a Partition not necessary with the modest velocity of this cartridge?

The 170 gr PT is a pretty tough bullet and it will work well on deer and black bear. For what the 30-30 is designed for and the velocities it generates, I still think the Core Lokt is tough to beat.

I shot my first deer with the 170 grain Partition using a newer than yours, Marlin 30-30. After he laid down ( first shot gut shot), I put another through both shoulders from approximately 125 yards. Good internal damage and complete pass through both shoulder.

A lot of people use this bullet (170 gr)in the 30-30 for elk in the timber here. Works wonders! Works well on mule deer and antelope under 200 yards also. Penetrates like the Dickens!

My Glenfield 30A likes 170 grain Nosler Partitions or 170 grain Remington Core Lokts behind 30 grains of Varget and a Federal 210 primer.

If it were me, I'd buy a box of 150 and 170 factory corelokt and see which one it liked more and if still not happy, I'd maybe get a box of hornady leverlution ammo and try it. Then, I'd refinish and scope the gun and hunt with it if to my liking or if not trade it off for something else.

In reality, a gun with a 150 max range would severely limit my potential shot capability out here, so, I would fix it up and use it as trading material, but that may not be true if I hunted hardwoods.

Yup I understand that one Yote Smoker. I often hunt some pretty wide open spaces myself, and most of my rifles are sighted-in at 300 yards or so and in fact I nailed a mulie doe at 400 yards earlier this season.

That said, I've always had a soft spot for some of the shorter range hunting opportunities; archery, traditional muzzle loaders, handguns, and yes, traditional tube-magazine lever guns. :grin: I just like 'em.

A couple of years ago, in the wide open spaces of Wyoming, I was glassing a buck at about 450 yards, hoping he'd cross the property line so I could take him... Then another buck walked up from the river behind me, and I shot him at about 30 yards.... Sheesh... Some use for my .25-06! :grin:

This .30-30 won't be my do-it-all rifle, but I think I'll have some fun with it. Permanent? Maybe, maybe not. I like it, but I've sold & traded off many guns that I liked over the years. Had it out to the range earlier today along with my .375 H&H Ruger single shot. What a nice way to spend the afternoon! The little .30-30 is extremely pleasant to shoot, and not half bad for accuracy either... I need to do some more shooting with it, but so far, so good!
