Loading for 6.5 Creedmoor

It's one of those cartridges that is in the 'when' not 'if' bucket.

When I finally shoot out my .243, it may well end up in 6.5. Great all around cartridge.

I'm so jealous. I got transferred with work and all my tools and reloading supplies are in storage for another month. My wife bought me a A Bolt Stalker in 6.5 Creedmoor and Minox 2-10x40 ZA5 for my birthday and there locked up in Dad's safe for another month. It's driving me nuts not being able to set it up and get to the range. I plan on running 125gr Partitions in it. Even have the dies and brass.

Well at least you have something to look forward too when you get home :) hopefully the next month goes quick for you. Sounds like a really nice gift from your wife.

JohnD386,

That's gotta be tough! I'm really liking my wife's. I believe that the rifle's moniker is well deserved as it would make an excellent stalking gun. I found out that Savage chambers their model 11 Lightweight Hunter in the Creedmoor which I think would also make just about the perfect hiking rifle for steep country mule deer and it looks pretty sharp too!

Word on the street is good luck finding a Browning in 6.5 Creedmoor. It appears they only chambered it in 2012. Only two of them on Gunbroker and the Stalker is $699. Kind of pricey for a Stalker.

The more I read about this little gem of a round the more i like it.

please post pics some groups will you ATM.

It is an excellent cartridge that won't kick you from under your hat. Yet, it will deliver the goods.

Hornaday sells a micrometer bullet seater adapter that fits any of their New Dimension dies. Turns them into match style dies - works really well!

You won't be dissapointed with the Creedmore or the Savage, congrats. I bet the lightweight Savage will still be a great shooter even with a lighter contour barrel.

Hopefully I'll get to spend some more time with it at the range this weekend. If I do, I'll photograph and share the results. Have Hornady Superformance ammo w/129 SST, Hornady Match ammo w/120 a-max and working on some handloads with varget and 140BTs. Just got through the 3-shot and clean routine, so should be able to print some actual groups as the fouler is killing me so far :x usually shots 2 and 3 are within an inch though so we'll see!

Jeff Quinn from Gun Blast was printing one-holers with that rifle and cartridge. Impressed me!

So, does this mean you're buying a Creedmoor?

No sir, not yet. Gene made me swear on my Eagle, Globe and Anchor that I'd get a 325 first!

This weekend brought us some beautiful range weather so I grabbed the wife and her Creedmoor to test some loads.

Here are some preliminary results.
Left to Right: 140 Nosler Custom Comp. over 34gr Varget at 2.802"COL, 140 BT(same load), Hornady Match 120A-Max, Hornady Superformance 129 SST
65CMbullets_zpsbb655d19.jpg

Shoots the 120 Match ammo pretty good! Shorter COL than my loads. These were ~2.765"
HDY120amax_zpsd149d8c1.jpg

My 140 BT Varget Handload. 2436 fps AVG. Obviously I started LOW as Nosler didn't publish Varget data w 140's. Looks like it needs a seating depth change, which was a common theme on my handloads, which were all loaded to 2.802" COL.

Caitlin65CM_zpsde6dfc84.jpg

Browning A-Bolt II composite stalker, ~7.25lbs w scope, 22" barrel.
65CMABoltII_zpsf47a2c01.jpg

I also shot the custom comps over both varget,34gr(2337fps ES-8, SD-4) and rl-17,39gr(2529 ES-44, SD-22) Both groups were 2 within .5-.75" and 1 out making ~1.25-1.5" groups (sry no pics. I forgot them)

The rl-17,39gr 140BT group was no exception. (2541fps, ES-24, SD-12)

The Hornady Superformance ammo was by far the hottest, pushing the 129 sst at 2869fps(ES-6, SD-3) didn't shoot another group with these after foulers.

I'll continue to work up with Varget and RL-17 with the 140s and then shorten them some after I find a good charge. Should get 2600-2700fps pretty easily. All loads are with Hornady brass, my handloads being once-fired when I loaded them. They've been very consistent from a neck-wall thickness standpoint(usually <.001"). My Hornady FL die produces .003" neck tension on once fired brass, so not too bad. No concentricity data yet. I also have Hybrid 100V and RL-15 that I'll try out.

Got the new recoil pad, so the next project is to shorten the stock, as it is still too long for Caitlin to shoot comfortably. My overall impression of this rifle continues to improve. It is just a handy, smooth little gun in a great cartridge and it appears that accuracy will be very good, once I get the variables nailed down. One cool thing: Hornady prints the ammo spec for their match ammo on the box for the 6.5 Creedmoor so I could duplicate that pretty easily if need be

That's a great report ATM. I would think as you start driving upwards on the powder, you just may bring your flyers in as well, as you are probably operating at the lower end of PSI's in order to get good consistent shots. It looks awesome. That factory stuff will make you work to beat it, that is for sure.

That is a very awesome looking package though. What a set up. I would imagine, with the 140 AB or PT, that would be a suitable elk killer in your wife's hand for sure.

Great shooting, I am watching this pretty close.

Also, if you want some QL data, hit us up, always more than willing to push you anything I have.
