Loading for the 280 Ackley...

Yes prices are crazy here you are looking at a C-note for 50-280AI Nosler brass ! I had a few gift cards so I bought 3 boxes of Nosler factory bullets they had 140gr. ABs. I used them to break in the barrel & getting use to the rifle.
I have 2 boxes 150gr. ABLRs & almost 2 boxes of 168gr. ABLRs likely I am going to stick with 150gr. for my 280AI & will use the 168gr. For the 7mm mags :).

Blessings,
Dan

It seems I ended up with one bad batch of 150 ABLR's...they're "wrinkled" forward of the ogive.

The other 2 boxes...different lot....appear to be OK.

Not all of them are wrinkled like that...but several of them are (appx. 60 of 200)

I wish I could find some Nosler AccuBond LR they have not been around here for at least 18 months now. Just doesn't make sense !

Blessings,
Dan

How much powder you going to add to get 3100 fps with the 280 AI?

280AI 150 gr ABLR
61.0 grs RL22
3100 fps

and FWIW, same load with a 150 gr PT

JD, that is amazing accuracy! I know my rifle can shoot those kinda of groups, but I am not so sure about the guy pulling the trigger holding up his end of the deal !

Blessings,
Dan

Great shooting fellas. Those are very good looking groups.

Jim, what are you going to do if you ever wear that magical barrel out. Talk about shooting everything real well!

Guess I would send her down the road and get a 30-06.

Masterful reply, Jim. Absolutely masterful.

Great shooting JD! My first/only .280AI also liked 61gr R22 and the Nosler 150 Ballistic Tip ( early 90's, using that awful WW nickel coated brass) I only got 2950 from its 22" barrel ( I was experimenting) but it worked in UT, WY and Texas Hill country. In that rifle, my bolt was "slightly" sticky at the Texas altitude/75deg, but no real problems. After that rifle I knew if I ever did another it would have at least a 24", most likely a 26" barrel. I looked for one of those newer 700 CDL SF in .280 as a candidate, but I couldn't make myself choose the Nosler version AI so dropped it. As it is, I am enjoying this 22" bbl 7mm Express with its bullets seated out for its longer throat...I'm within 50fps of my "old" 280AI,ha. Stay warm Pard, Rev Jim

I'm thinking its about that time...maybe another couple of weeks.

Man, you have to be getting a little anxious I'd bet....

I know you're having a 280AI built, but couldn't find our specs. What are you having done?

I'm in the component compiling phase for a 280AI (my Redding Custom Comp. seating die is supposed to be on the UPS truck today).I haven't even sent my rifle in yet for re-barrel (want to wait till after this hunting season).

Anyway, I'd love to hear about your soon-to-be-there rifle build sheet.

Looks very cool! (y)

But is it normal to have a 9(maybe +) month backlog on a rifle build? I'm sure it will be great, but man… that's a long time to wait. :?

It is assuredly not unusual for custom and/or semi-custom rifles to wait that long, and longer.

A long wait is a possibility with any custom built anything...pistol, rifle, Harley, etc.

I got a Les Baer 1911 a few years back that was supposed to take 4 months...ended up being right at 9...and its been worth every minute of that wait, and then some...darn fine pistol, shoots as good as it looks!

The wait isn't so bad....I'd rather wait on something that is built right than get something that is half assed in a day or 2.

Its a mindset...decide you want a custom build, order it, and enjoy it when it gets there (whenever that may be)...don't rush it, if you want it right now then maybe a custom build is not what you want.
