Loading for the 280 Ackley...

3 rounds fired...Nosler factory ammo (160 PT).....2,943 fps avg (2,950 fps advertised)

Case capacity...73.9 grains.

Nice soft recoil, I really like that stock...its a good fit.

Boy. If they shoot you could be done! A few boxes of them would go a long way!
Ha....I can't afford that... But you're right, a 160 PT at 2,950 fps would cover a lot of ground.

Reloads...

150 ABLR, Norma MRP

60.5 = 3,043 fps
61 = 3,070
61.5 = 3,093 fps
62 = 3,120 fps

EDITED: Corrected chrono readings

MRP burn rate correction to make it match is .382

QuickLoad tweaking...this will likely change as more data is gathered.

EDIT: Ba correction for this batch of MRP is .4

62.5 = 3,137 fps (too hot, do not use)
63 = 3,167 fps (too hot, do not use)
63.5 = 3,192 fps (way too hot, ejector mark, do not use)

I'm gonna roll with 62 grains as MAX load of MRP for the OCW test.

Temperature...66 degrees

160 AccuBond, Norma MRP (Ba correction .4)...moved chrono out of sunlight, working much better now.

58.5 = 2,956 fps
59 = 2,972 fps
59.5 = 2,989 fps
60 = 3,003 fps, no signs of pressure but a dialed in QuickLoad says 60.5 is maxed out at 3,027 fps, so I'm not chasing this one any further.

Gonna retest 63 grains with 150 ABLR after the rain shower is over....if nothing else, I'm getting the barrel break in done, and finding MAX loads with my chosen components...and having fun (y)

QuickLoad burn rate correction is coming in at .4 (Ba #) for this batch of MRP...gonna edit the above post, MAX with MRP and 150 ABLR is likely gonna be 62 instead of 63...still gonna fire these other 3 rounds to make sure.

Based on what I've seen today...the 280 Ackley doesn't show pressure until above 67,000 psi...that has always been said of Ackley rounds, and my shooting today tells me it is true.

Heading back down the hill to verify that with those 3 rounds loaded at 63 grains with 150 ABLR's.

Yep...63 grains with a 150 ABLR is a little warm (3,165 fps, VERY, VERY slight ejector marks)

62 grains is MAX with the 150 ABLR and Norma MRP...3,120 fps.

I'm ready for the OCW load workup now...I know where to stop...and the barrel break in is done....46 rounds fired.

All previous posts have been edited with corrected data.

Range trip tomorrow, weather permitting...

Starting with a clean barrel (again), gonna fire a couple groups with the Nosler factory ammo...and 1 group with 62 grains of MRP under a 150 ABLR, just out of curiousity....and do the tall target test to check my scope vertical adjustment.

Almost forgot....

After those initial 5 rounds she isn't copper fouling.....none.

A quality barrel and properly lapped throat do away with such difficulties. Good stuff.

First group...Nosler ammo, 160 Partitions...there were some better groups fired (neat lil cloverleafs, all shots touching)...the better groups showed up after about 20 rounds, when she settled down.

My reloads...150 ABLR, 62 grains MRP...just a test of MAX load with that bullet and powder, to see what it did...I think it shows promise! (y) ...I only took 3 rounds of this ammo today, I think it would have stacked them if I had done my part.

I should imagine those groups will permit you to fall asleep with a smile on your face. Very encouraging.
