Loading for Youth

I believe he settled in on the 350 legend already. I'll see him this weekend and see what his status is. You all had some great suggestions. I feel if he goes 350 legend, there will be no need for reduced loads. His daughter should have no problem handling that rifle, comfortably.

I hunted N. Carolina with a guy that used the 350 Legend , and factory ammo . the cartridge worked well on whitetails . I don't ever recall him complaining about it .

I’d get a .223 Rem that fits her. Make shooting fun and she’ll want to go shooting.

75 ELDM kills deer and I mean right now.

Three years ago, one shot.

It’s where you shoot them that matters most. In my experience (your mileage may vary but I’ll bet it doesn’t) teaching kids to shoot, rifles with the least recoil result in the best accuracy.

.223 is fantastic from a mild manner stand point, but shot placement is so important with those. That caliber is not very forgiving and most new, young hunters need all the forgiveness they can get haha.

PA outlawed them for whitetail some years back, then brought it back.. then tried to outlaw it again recently but lost. I suspect they will keep trying though haha

Tell me about your on-game experience with the .223.

Only on whitetail, my experience is from a few years bake taking my buddies 15 year old son while he took his younger daughter. Chase hunted with a .223 for four years. We did a lot of tracking, every one of them! Then for his 16th birthday, he got "upgraded" to a 243.. haha

Did you lose any? I’ve had to track deer shot with a 30-06.

For anyone with several days of free time:

75 grain ELDM (my load) is a close second.

Shot an antelope with a 223AI XP-100...Probably the same performance level as a 223 rifle with 75 grain A-Max. Bullet did it's job.
A 75M or 80M will work great on deer.
80 M works great on hogs too with my 22 Creed XP pistol...Again, slower MV's than what you would get with a rifle.
88M's also work good on deer - 22GT center-grip XP-100

From my experiences it is hard to be the Nosler 64gr BSB for a .224 cal with young hunters.
