Loads and performance for 180 grain BT out of a 308 win?

I figured the 180 would be stout and would expand in a more controlled manner at the slower speeds out of a 308 win vs 150 or 165 BT's with more reliable performance when presented with a bad angle or shoulder shot...

what kind of loads and velocity should I work with? thinking varget or rl-15. Velocity? on game performance for deer and hogs and a yote or two?

would you think this would create more or less of a would channel compared to a 150 gr accudond out of a 308 win?

I'd use a 165 Partition or AccuBond over a 180 on an elk out of a 308 win and feel confident. A 180 in either one of these bullets would be very good on closer shots but I prefer a slightly bullet with good construction with a bit more speed and range. In my opinion, the 180 is best used in the 30-06 and 165 in 308.

The 180 gr BT will work well in your 3008 Win on deer and hogs. You are correct that the lower velocity will be less destructive on game.
Varget, RL15, and good 'ol IMR4350 would be good powders to try.

I do agree with YoteSmoker that the 165 gr is about perfect for the 308 Win. You could consider the 165 gr AB as an all around bullet with higher velocity. It will do a great job on any deer or hog.

IMO a lots depends on what your hunting and how far the shots will be, generally speaking. For my hunting needs around here I like 180 grain Nosler bullets in either the AccuBond or partitions for a 308. Not that the 165 would not work because it will I'm just a fan of heavier bullets. I like to have the additional weight when you are presented with a less than perfect shot angle. Speed at close range can and will cause more meat damage and loss than a slower bullet. Out to 200 yards with a 308, I say 200 yards because I like to see 1800 EFP at the impact range. I'm thinking elk here, IMO with deer sized game you can have less than 1800 EFP at impact and be in good shape. Nice thing about Nosler bullets is no matter which Nosler bullet weight you choose they WILL get the job done if you do your part.
