Long, dark, cold...and overthinking guns. Again.

Vince and Cheyenne

I am sure the 338 Win has been used to bring down a Buffalo, in fact I know it has. The 338 Win with the proper premium bullet is an excellent plains game caliber and if you know what you are doing and your will is in order, it can also be used for buffalo.

In most African Countries the minimum requirement for Hippo, Elephant and Buffalo is the 375 H & H. Several countries do not have a legal minimum, but usually recommend that the minimum caliber that should be used as the 375 H & H

Namibia has a minimum requirement of 5400 Joule's, not a minimum caliber and Zimbabwe has a minimum of 5300 Joule's or 9.3 caliber. The minimum in RSA is determined by each province, but to my knowledge they all state the 375 H & H as the minimum. Some countries also leave it up to the landowners to decide what is the minimum caliber that can be used on a certain species on their property.

Some countries also have a maximum which is 577 N.E.

It should also be noted that the Western Savanna buffalo is not only smaller than the Cape buffalo, but usually is not as ornery, and these are found in the countries that do not have a minimum legal requirement.

It should also be stated that "greasing a palm" in Africa is pretty common. So one can usually pay to play the game in whatever manner he or she chooses.

Hodgeman, the 375 H & H is a time honored caliber for a reason and if it is good enough to hunt buffalo with, it should be good enough for bear or moose lol

Best Regards

Jamila

Boy, 5400 joule's is a lot of joule's.   What's a joule :?: I'm think foot lbs of energy.

This thread almost has me tempted to change my Nosler Rifle order from a .338 Win Mag to a 30-06.

I tend to use a larger caliber for animals which have a reputation of being harder to kill, despite my shooting abilities which are seriously adequate. Especially by those individuals who are less than half my age and have killed and shot much less than I have. In fact having one teen ager, at the time, tell me that I sounded as though I knew nothing and he was 17 years old and was just finishing High School!!!!! I guess that I may have mistakenly thought that I knew something at that age also!!!!!!!

In essence I feel that some of these people just like to feel superior to me, despite my greater experience and more education and think I am a nattering nabob, city boy which I am not. Especially this behavior becomes so boring after being told the same thing 30 times by a single individual making me feel like telling them to can it and grow up!

I don't care how many brown or green wooly whatever's you have killed by the time you were 15 years old, or where you live. None of us, except Cheyenne, kills game year round!!!!!!

What people are you referring to? I don't see anybody casting dispersions on anyone on here regardless of their preferred cartridge choice.

It's been stated 100 times there is no such thing as too much as long as placement doesn't suffer. I killed a pair of whitetails with a 458 lott one time, just because! Worked just fine, but so did my 243.

Vince, if you are giving my old friend the .30-06 serious consideration, take a look at the 200 gr Nosler AccuBond with a BC of .588, and a potential muzzle velocity of nearly 2700 fps according to the Nosler reloading manual.

That is one serious big game bullet. Also a 200 yard zero is only about 8-9" low at 300 and two feet low at 400 yards. Very useful, roughly the same trajectory as my .375 H&H, with nowhere near the recoil.

Just something to stick into the ol' brain housing group and mull over.

On the other hand, it'll never be a .338 Win mag, which seems to be what you really want...

Enjoy the journey, either way it's going to be a great rifle!

I thought one Joule was two Marias?

My son said something a little off color recently when discussing joule's. his sister who is a year older, but they are both teenager's, said " we are discussing Joule's and your thinking "Jolie" ( Angelina)"

Hodgeman, did this thread get seriously derailed . I am another meat and potato man. 30-06 and 375 H & H covers a lot of ground for me. But if you want something in between those two, I agree with Fotis and cheyenne's husband, the 340 Weatherby is not chopped liver

Just because your paranoid doesn't mean people are not spying on you!

Grow up!

Ouch, what can I do to compete with such an amazing wit!

Your continued need to turn all posts about yourself and extolling your great skill and experience along with your paranoia of persecution from those who "feel superior to me" shows a serious lack of emotional maturity. So while you may have grown old, you, yourself might benefit from some "growing up" of your own.

So reading between the lines... Your vote 338 win mag, got it.

I miss my .338 and .340 but still have a .30-06 because it is a more useful cartridge for an old man who does not hunt much anymore. I just get tired of being told what I should believe and should do by someone half my age or less.

I have worked in 30+ countries and or lived in 5 countries and have hunted in about 15 states and lived in 22 states during my long life. I don't need some boy telling me what to do and what to shoot, so back off, Bear!! I may just block you as a Boor.

It is wit! get an education! Whit is somebody like you whom I don't give a whit about, look it up! You find your third grade spelling book, moron? BTW 5400 Joules is 3915 Foot pounds. Close but no cigar, sonny!

I've never hunted Alaska, but I know a couple fellows who live up there who use the 338 winmag on everything. I've killed elk/elk sized animals with the mediums in 338, 340, 338 RUM, 375 H&H and 35 Whelen AI. Up to 350yds, my Whelen with the Barnes 200X did everything they did. Over that yardage and I prefer the 338 RUM or 340. My first trip to South Africa I used the Whelen AI and the Barnes 250X and it cut big holes all the way through wildebeest, zebra and smaller stuff. My 3rd trip, the same Whelen and 200X did the same exact thing! I had a muzzlebrake put on it when I had a neck fusion in 2000. Its not really needed but my wife heard the surgeon tell me to take it easy awhile... that's all I have to say...about that. lol I really thought all "real sourdoughs" either shot a sporter 1903 Springfield or 1917 Enfield with factory 30-06 ammo or wildcatted the '06 from 35 to 400 Whelen or any levergun to the 50 Alaskan! ha, just teasing. I've never had any Barnes from 30 cal up through 375 that didn't open up just beautifully, especially on thick skin/heavy muscle critters. In fact, the only Barnes I did not see open up at all was an 85XBT from a 6x47 ( .243 velocity from a 27" bbl) on a jack rabbit. They worked textbook on axis deer and a scimitar horned oryx. I have no experience with any GMX bullet. I might add that I had just as good results from the older Winchester Failsafes as the Barnes. Good luck to you...but get the 35 Whelen Ackley Improved in a 24" bbl in any bolt gun you like! ha. You can't get the 250X anymore, but they tell me the 225TSX is just awesome on big animals too.

That 1917 is just awesome. The first time I saw yours I ran across one in an 06 and dreams of a 400 Whelen danced in my head for a week! Well, more like a month.
