Nice Still doing the 26" barrel?

[DrMike]

Very nice, Vince. That should be a dandy acquisition for you.

[Rol_P]

That is very nice Vince.. Sure will put the fear in those moose up north this fall. Best of luck with it.

Vince,

Very nice buddy.
When do you expect to get your M48 Custom?

About April I think.

Nice Still doing the 26" barrel?

So far.
I have a 22 " barrel on my 30-06 now so I was thinking a 26 " barrel on this one for a two gun 30-06 combo.
Having second thoughts about that now. Just wondering what gains I can expect to see.

I don't know... never put the chronograph to work when my 1917 .30-06 had a 26" barrel. It's close to "book" velocity trimmed to the 21" length, so I'm thinking there might be a fair bit to gain with a full 26" tube...

Dunno. You'll have to tell us!

I read a really interesting article about longer barrels on the 30-06 by a bloke named German Salazar.
He seems to contradict a lot of the gunshop wisdom. I've been getting told by some that I won't see significant gains over the 22" barrel. I guess I'll just have to try it and see.

[6mm Remington]

Vince my Ruger #1B in 30-06 has the standard factory 26" barrel and I am getting 2940 fps with 165 gr. Partitions or Accubonds with 57.4 grs of IMR4350. I used that exact same load in a 22" barrel on a Model 700, but when I had that rifle I did not own a chronograph. It would be interesting to see how it would shake out. Take a look at some testing I did.

viewtopic.php?f=45&t=19372

In this testing I used 3 different rifles in 6mm Remington with three different bullets. The loads were the exact same used in each rifle. The little model 600 Remington has the 18 1/2" barrel, the Ruger M77 has a 22" barrel, and my #1B in 6mm has the 26" barrel. This gives a good view of different barrel lengths and effects on muzzle velocity. What my test showed seemed to go along with most of the reading I have done on how barrel length effects velocity in most cases.

By the way I cannot wait for you to get that new rifle. It is gorgeous!

[FOTIS]

MV 2000-2500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
MV 2500-3000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
MV 3000-3500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
MV 3500-4000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

[Vince]

80 fps if that's accurate.
Not as big of a gain as I was hoping.
I'll just have to give it a go and see. One of my mates has a 26" barrel on his 30-06 and loves it. He states he's in the high 2900 fps to just over 3000 fps with 165/168 grail pills.
