Moose Are Winding Down

I haven't been able to get out as much as I wished this season. Now, the season closes on the 31st. I went out this morning. It was snowing (quite hard at times) and terribly sloppy. I saw no elk and six or seven mule deer. Ruffed grouse were plentiful, but I took none because I didn't want to scare away any moose. I did see two legal bulls... Of course, they were on private land and refused to come to where I waited patiently for them. Now, that is frustrating. I'll give it another try later. I may go moose-less. Gil and I saw a nice bull on Monday, but alas, he also was on private land posted "No Hunting." Anyone have a good recipe for "tag soup?"

Finely diced added to about 4 cups of my own tears, maybe a dash liquid smoke. That's how I prefer mine usually.

Dr Mike, you still have the weekend and I hope it is a successful weekend for you and Gil if he will be hunting with you. On the last day off the season take a shotgun and knock down a grouse for two, they have to be better eating than your moose tags.

Best Regards

Jamila

Jamila,

I've harvested lots of grouse throughout the season. Noah has taken a good number, as well. This evening he phoned to tell me he was sick. If the weather remains right at zero, it will be very sloppy to make it up the mountain. I was sliding badly this morning. I am watching the weather, hoping that we get some colder temps over the weekend. I have taken my share of moose on the last day of the season, but it is usually much colder than now. Gil and I were out on Monday. Unfortunately, I have to work hard tomorrow and Saturday. I have to get my house clean as my wife is coming home after being gone for a month. Cleaning day, you know.

DrMike, I sure hope it comes together for you in these last few days of your Moose season (y).
Which area have you been hunting these last 2 times you have been out?
I hope Noah is feeling better & gets out with you as well.

Blessings,
Dan

I've hunted in a couple of areas you never visited, Dan. Higher up in the mountains.

Hope you are able to track down a moose in the weekend Dr.Mike.
This is the craziest fall i have ever seen,
My dad says it was like this in 59'.
You guys get much snow yet?

It snows an inch or so, and is melted within a couple of days. That makes for a really soaked environment. The roads in the back country are difficult to negotiate.

59----? Even Dr Mike doesn't remember "59"

Dr Mike, I sent some big bulls your way, they should be there by Sunday---Monday is the day you fill the freezer with moose meat.

Hope you get one, hope Noah is feeling better and is able to hunt with you, if not in School, if not maybe Gil can sneak out and go with you---best of luck. Whatever you do, be careful in the snow and don't slip and slide and re injure those knees. Be safe, be careful and look for the bull with the note I attached too him--it says happy halloween Dr Mike, Love, Cheyenne

I've taken bulls on Halloween on two of the last five years. That's cutting it short. Let's hope that bull doesn't decide to stop over in Fort Saint John for a pint or two, Cheyenne. It would help immensely if we got a real plunge in temps over the next two days. The roads are in rough shape. I slid into the ditch on one of the last chicken outings I made with Noah. He was concerned that I wouldn't get us out. However, the old dog has a few tricks up his sleeve (as is often the case for old dogs). The gumbo from which the roads are built becomes like driving on very deep axle grease when it gets wet; and it is wet right now. I slid sideways down a very steep hill yesterday, though I managed to keep the truck on the road and not slide off over the edge. Going back up that hill was somewhat interesting. It would have helped to have a moose in the back as ballast.

Sounds like 4X4 with tire chains would be the choice of action for these roads but a pain to put on and remove when you get back on asphalt.

Neat idea. There are only about 25,000 reasons stopping me from picking up a set. :? I do like the concept, however. (y)

Ha ha. Yeah, I told my 27 year old son he should get some tire chains before his elk hunt and this is what he sent me. I hope he was kidding! Just thought I would share it.

I have seen those a couple of times on quads and these seem to work real well .
However for 1/2 that price I would personally look at a side by side with a cab type enclosure(y).
You can trailer it to your starting point and then go from there, either way it is a lot of cash .

Blessings,
Dan
