Moose, lets be realistic

I am always dreaming of hunting and today started thinking about moose. I know a float trip in the Yukon is the ultimate but I need to be realistic with price. Is there a moose hunt that a guy could take and still have money to eat and turn the lights on at home after everything is paid for? I am willing to save up and wait but I am also looking at what is an obtainable goal.

Newfoundland is a great deal to hunt moose in my opinion. Next best for price is start stacking points up in Wyoming, Colorado and Montana.. Idaho is a draw as well. Those may be the least expensive, but Newfoundland has a great population and their prices are usually pretty reasonable.

Budget $6000 for moose in Newfoundland, including travel, with getting the meat shipped home, packaged, and processed.

Moose hunts in BC can be purchased for well under $7000 Canadian (~$5400 USD). This usually includes meals and accommodations.

BC and Saskatchewan have some pretty good values as well. You could drive there.

That is something I haven't seen. Usually BC has been quite pricey (just what I have seen). I have always sorta thought BC hunts have been between a NF hunt and a Yukon/Alaska hunt.

I apologize for leaving BC out. If you have the chance, get there. I would imagine your eyeballs will be as big as pie plates once you see that wild country..

Took me two years.
I'll be departing the local airport in September for Newfoundland. I booked my hunt through Cabela's two years out. They were good to work with but having learned a lot I won't be as apprehensive to do the work myself next time. I narrowed it to three outfitters in Newfoundland and then called Cabela's. When I learned that they used one of the three outfitters I was considering and that the price was the same as what I would pay I chucked it all and signed up.

Mom would be disappointed in me if I did not recommend that you consider Sweden. One of the selling points to hunting moose in Sweden is that the Capercaille hunting season is at the same time, and that is another fun hunt

J, what would it cost for an American or Canadian to come to Sweden to hunt moose?

I'd love to do one of the dog driven moose hunts.. Those dogs are some beautiful and the way they push the moose is too cool..

Be a good excuse for one of those 9.3x62's as well....

And of course, you might be fortunate enough to secure an opportunity to watch workouts with the female Swedish swim team.

Scotty,

I do not know sir but can find out for you if you want me to. Do you want me to include air fare from ?

They are fun hunts Scotty, but to be honest I never paid, so I will have to contact mom. They also have dog driven Elk hunts Scotty, (-;

Wisconsinteacher. Again I have no idea to, costs. But mom and dad said the best moose hunt they ever went on was in Kamchatka. They said the moose ( and bear ) were HUGE. The country was like turning the clock back 100 years and the people were friendly. just something else for you to consider. Of course that was 10, maybe 15 years ago, so it might have changed

Best Regards

Jamila

I've got friends in Sweden that I'd love to go hunt with.
I'll have to give them a call.

Yup, I would agree with Vince. Hunts can start for $3800 and up, depending on which outfitter you would choose.

$5000-$6000 would be safe, depends on where your travelling from, and how many are in your group as well to cover fuel costs/ferry etc.

A DIY Alaska moose hunt is well within your price range... if you understand how to hunt and can wade through the logistics and regulations a DIY moose hunt is entirely doable. Non-res tags are available OTC for a lot of spots.

Research is important but it just takes some time.

A DIY moose hunt here in Idaho is probably a good option too check into also. Moose here are "once-in-a-lifetime" draw hunts, with odds of drawing equal for everyone (no point accrual system). Moose hunt applicants are NOT eligible to put in for any draw hunts for deer or elk , so the applicant pool isn't as large, nor are the odds as bad, as a lot of people think. You've got to purchase a hunting license in order to apply, but the actual application fee (I think it's $170 or so) is refunded if you don't draw. No guides required (there are guides out there if you prefer that) and we have areas with a lot of moose. Applications have to be in by the end of April, and draw results are usually available around Memorial Day, so it gives a fair amount of time for planning and prep.

I am sorry, my joking with Scotty mislead a couple of members. I apologize for that.

As most here already know, there are two types of Elk. The Wapiti in America and the Moose in Sweden.

I have emailed my mother Scotty and ask her what the cost is to hunt Moose/Elk in Sweden and as soon as I hear from her, I will let you know.

Hodgeman. Can a non resident DYI hunt everything in Alaska or do some animals, like perhaps the brown bear or goat require a guide. ? Does the non resident have to pay anything to the State up front, which he will get back he he doesnt have to have anyone come look for him ?

Best Regards

Jamila

Here, Wapiti refers to what we call elk. When I was in Norway, I saw moose, which the Norwegians called "ek"

Washington has a limited moose draw, odds are long though... Once in a lifetime tag. I think there are going to be more permits, as the moose population seems to be flourishing.
