Alright, anticipation is building. Moose (any bull) opens in thirteen days. I had a call last evening from a friend telling me that several moose are hanging around. If all goes well, my grandson will be in on his first moose kill. He is so excited. He prays each evening, asking God to let him and his "Pa" get a moose on opening day. He phoned his mom advising her to clean out her freezer because he was bringing home moose. Doggone, but his enthusiasm is catching, I do believe.

I hope it all works out for him, hopefully it won't be quite as hot on the 15th as it is now.

We've had cool mornings. If it isn't on the ground by nine, he can wait until the next day. It is always possible to see snow at that time, or at least much cooler temperatures (I hope, I hope, I hope).

When he bags a big bull we will need to see some good pictures :)

Big or little, I want him to get a little blood on his cheek. He certainly is getting me excited, that's for sure.

Mike,

Best of luck to you and your grandson. I am pulling for both of you to be successful.
What guns and loads are you both going to be using?

Noah may or may not pull the trigger. He is a bit hesitant, but planning on coming back up for elk and/or whitetail and mule deer in October. He feels somewhat more confident with them. In any case, he has a .260 Remington Model 7 loaded with 140 grain Partitions. We'll work on this for a couple of days at the range and try to build his confidence. One of the problems is that we discovered that he is left-eye dominant, and the rifle I have for him is a right-handed version. I'm negotiating for a left-handed Sako 6.5-.284 which would require some rapid range work. That would likely make him quite a bit more confident at this point.

I will likely be carrying either my newer .280 Remington with 140 grain Partitions or my 35 Whelen with 225 grain Partitions. I'm reworking loads for these two to shoot this coming week. I have excellent loads worked up and ready to go in the following rifles: 9.3X64 Brenneke (250 grain AccuBond), 325WSM (200 grain Partitions), 350 Remington Magnum (200 grain TSXs), 338 Federal (200 grain E-Tip), .270WSM (130 grain E-Tip) and my older .280 Remington (140 grain Partitions). Each of these latter have harvested moose and/or elk at various times and work to perfection. The aforementioned are unblooded and need to be used on game.

Mike, I believe your grandson will be just pumped to be with you. If he gets a crack @ a Moose it is a real bonus. Best of luck to u my friend :). Noah good luck to you as well  you are a lucky young man as you are being taught by one of the best .

Blessings,
Dan

Good luck to you all Mike :) I'm sure all well go well, ..I drew a bull tag here in Ontario, and can't wait for October pal  ...Lou

Yeah, moose gets in the blood. It is hard to wait these last several days. What a mixture of anticipation and excitement!

Great choices Mike.
I hope it all comes together for Noah.

This is going to be great! Old Pa better have his legs stretched, as I imagine when young Noah catches scent of a moose, it'll take a herd of horses to hold him back!

I'm planning on doing some scouting after church this afternoon. I know where a few moose linger about.

I imagine you've got a decent idea where those moose are hanging their heads. I am very much looking forward to Noah getting in on some action. I'd be prepared for that young boy to take up residence at Pa's for as long as he can once he figures out how much fun it is hunting with Pa!

This is some excellent news though Mike. I know you all have some great moose hunting in your area, so that boy should have an excellent time in the bush with you.

Dr. Mike,
Best of luck Moose Hunting, any of the guns you listed will get the job done, But as you know my vote would be the 35 Whelen ! Also how exciting hunting with your grandson too.

Don

Best of luck to you and Noah.

I look forward to hearing, reading, your report.

Well, the season is shortly upon us. It has rained quite a bit this summer, and it is very wet in the bush. It is more humid than I've ever seen it here in northern BC. Still, we can have some cool mornings, so that will help. So long as I have an animal down before 8:30, I should be in good shape to get him into the butcher. When the temperature rises to much above 18 C, I head home and wait for late evening or the next morning. We spent the afternoon at the fair yesterday, watching the chuck wagon races to celebrate Noah's birthday. I made arrangements for a rifle and bought him a knife in the morning. We're both pretty pumped.

Well, I'd say that boy is ready and PAPA will make sure there is a proper rifle ready to hunt! Good luck!

We're working on it, Scotty. He has the .260 now, but I am looking at a Tikka chambered in 7mm-08. We'll cut down the stock, turning it into a youth rifle. I'll work up a load with 120 grain BTs, and he should be good to go. We're headed to the range on Monday to do load work with the .280 and the 35 Whelen.
