Moose Opens in Thirteen Days

I hope that I am not talking out of turn for gerry but I think that you have been blessed beyond measure having left handed shooters enter into your life . I thought you looked very natural last May when looking down my 35 Whelen left handed, don't fight  . It will give you a totally new perspective on life . It is just a matter of time and you will see the way of the lefty 8).
Noah on a serious note you are a blessed young lad and following your grandpa around will pay big dividends in your journey into manhood.
Mike you are going to have a great fall and the companionship is going to be special.

Blessings,
Dan

We spent the day at the range today. He is getting pretty good with a rifle. We bought a Tikka which is being rechambered and rebarreled to .260. We measured him for LOP and settled on a 22 inch barrel. It may mean an aftermarket stock later, but it will be his. This rifle should be ready within a month or so; he can still use it for elk and/or deer this fall. Now, I need to get to work for Zachary and Hannah. I do believe Noah is going to be thrilled.

That sounds excellent Mike, the 260 Rem is a very good round that will cover a lot of hunting for him with bullets from 85 gr Sierra's to 160 gr heavyweights :) The more lefties that shoot from their natural side the better for all of us, the manufacturers will need to produce even more guns for all of we are all hoping early Thursday morning he bags a nice bull :)

The .260 in that rifle lightened and shortened should be a great cartridge for a boy that age. Grandpa is giving him a great gift with that Tikka sized for him!

He's pretty pumped, Gerry. He is having second-thoughts on moose, however, as he doesn't have his own left-handed rifle. Tim felt he could have this Tikka ready for elk and/or deer, which would allow Noah to come back up for a visit next month. We'll see. I'm not pushing him, but letting him move at his own pace. He wants to be there, however, when the moose drops. His older brother was made to kiss a fish when we went fishing on Great Slave Lake, and Noah wants to kiss a moose with photographic evidence that he did so.

Here is his older brother at Noah's age, when he kissed a pike. Admittedly, he had some help from a redskin and the RCMP.

Stay tuned; I hope to make this memorable for the lad.

Thanks, Charlie. I believe it will be a great cartridge for him. We can always make it suitable as he grows by picking up another stock.

Wow, that's pretty danged cool Mike. A 260 is such a useful cartridge, it has to be pretty easy on the littler shooters. Hoping to have something along those lines for Dylann when she gets of age. I think the 264 is a might big for her first one!

That pike picture is hillarious.. Danged Canadian's kissing fish and moose. What's the world coming to?

Or in .257 Roberts for that matter.
Yep, Scotty, you're definitely gonna need another pre-64 or two for those kids of yours...

Whoa! Easy there fella's! I would love a Pre 64 243 for Dylann. That would be sweet.

Heck, I already asked Brandon if he would trade his 7mm Mauser for something else I had. He told me to pound sand!

Scotty,
My Indian buddy's pre-64 in 243 has now served four generations! He got it from his grandfather and his youngest son recently used it to take his first elk. They are absolutely deadly with it and swear that 243 Win is the deadliest caliber out there. Based on their results, I'd have trouble arguing their point. Somehow (like a lot of other pre-64s), after all these years and rounds down the pipe, it still manages to shoot accurately. I don't even want to think about how much game it has taken, but you can bet it's a lot.

BT

Doc,
As always, a fine cartridge selection. The .260 is about as good and efficient as it gets!

Dylann already has a sweet shooting Rem 700 Youth 243  That's great that Big B is really digging the 7mm Mauser.

Dr Mike,

Good luck to you guys and hope your grandson gets a whopper moose on the ground. Don't know about kissing one???

Good luck out there today! Hope you score some meat for the locker pretty shortly!

Okay, we're back for this day. We saw quite a few mule deer and found a lot of elk spoor. We saw two moose, but they weren't legal. The temperature is already up to 17C, so we came home for the day so grandpa could get some work done. We'll head out tomorrow morning again and continue our exploration. It is incredibly wet in the bush, which makes travel somewhat difficult.

Noah was certainly excited. I awoke at 12:10, at 1:40 and at 2:42; I finally gave up and got out of bed on that final wake-up. I went to Noah's bedroom to waken him, and he met me at the door. He was showered and dressed in record time--I hadn't even finished my coffee. We loaded up our kit, stopped at Tim Horton's for a couple of breakfast sandwiches and struck out for the bush. He was throwing questions at me at the rate of about ten each kilometer. I finally had to caution him that if he asked me any questions once we were on site, I'd staple his mouth shut. He was really good, but clearly excited. Exhaustion appears to have settled in at last. He is collapsed on the couch in the living room. He did allow that he thought he could be in bed by 7:30 this evening so he would be ready in the morning.

appreciate all the updates. Interesting. Enjoying working with guns and hunting along with the two of you through you post.

Hi Mike, I know just how you feel . I know that you are having the time of your life teaching your grandson!!! He will remember these times forever.
We are heading up north tomorrow to start the scouting. Real nice surprise this morning as my closest childhood Bud is in Regina from California and popped over for coffee and then supper this evening :) BBQ Moose steaks this evening.
We talked abit he advised that 22-LRs are selling for .20 to .25 cents per shell  someone is making too much money at those prices.
Looking forward to the morning reports on your Moose hunt
.

Blessings,
Dan

Sounds like a great time. Good to see the enthusiasm! Best of luck, and we'll look forward to the results.

Deo Volente. It is still warm (14 C) and very wet (it rained last evening). Still, the animals are there. They just aren't moving as much as I would like.

Mike, I know it is just a matter of time until you harvest a young bull :). Noah is just soaking all this in my friend!! Have fun & be safe.

Blessings,
Dan
