Moose Opens in Thirteen Days

We're working on it, Scotty. He has the .260 now, but I am looking at a Tikka chambered in 7mm-08. We'll cut down the stock, turning it into a youth rifle. I'll work up a load with 120 grain BTs, and he should be good to go. We're headed to the range on Monday to do load work with the .280 and the 35 Whelen.

That's excellent Mike. I know he'll have a great time and I am pulling for him, alot! I hope he is able to smoke a moose for his freezer. I imagine you wouldn't be able to keep that young lad quiet for a year with a moose on the ground!

Hoping you get to use the Whelen this year. What are you running in it for bullets right now?

Mike, what a great opportunity for both of you!!!!!!! What a great pleasure and a wonderful time. Enjoy it to the fullest.

I'm running 225 TSXs now. However, I have some loads built with 225 Partitions and 280 A-Frames that I'm testing.

Excellent. Hopefully that Swift get's a shot at the title. That 225 TSX is a brute. First real bullet I ever loaded in my Whelen. Did pretty danged well on a poor elk, black bear and a couple of little deer.

I do hope that Swift comes around though. That bullet has to be a MACK truck on big stuff. Elmer Keith is smiling from above with a bullet like that in the spout!

I'll give a report if it looks to be positive in my rifle. It'll be a busy time in the early part of the week. I have some forensic work to do for the Crown and some load work with a 7 WBY as well.

Gotcha, I need to look for a space for rent in your town Mike. I imagine I could help you out with "testing"!

I would have loved to try the 275 Woodleigh or Swifts out in mine, but being it is a 1-16" I am not sure it is worth the price of of the bullets..

There's always room for you up here, Scotty. I don't have any of the Woodleighs, or I' would definitely be testing them. I do have a fair assortment of the big Woodleighs in 8mm, .358 and 9.3mm, and they are being tested from time-to-time. I have no doubt of their performance on game here in the hinterlands.

Hi Mike, I just wondering if you and your grandson have been able to get out and do some early morning or evening glassing for a young bull?

Blessings,
Dan

Dan, we've not really spent much time in the bush. There is a large enough population that finding a bull shouldn't be difficult this year. The only deficit is that it is so incredibly wet at the moment. We had thundershowers again all night and throughout the early morning. Even walking in can be a chore at the present.

Sure has been a different summer :( we have really not had very much heat this year. This past Friday temp was only 4C that is very cool for early August. This coming week highs of only 25 C really nice but no heat.
I am sure that you will be able to locate a nice you g bill or 2 .

Blessings,
Dan

Mike, three days till the big hunt, has the boy packed his day pack yet? Nothing like packing and repacking for a few days to get the fever up!

Here's to a productive range session and a successful hunt for the two of you, Doc. Moose or not, though, it can still be called a success. Enjoy!

DrMike, I am strongly left eye dominant but I have shot right handed with a rifle all of my life. This really has screwed me up for shotgun proficiency, however. Maybe it would be better to start him left handed as it would make him more proficient with the shotgun? I also shoot revolver left eyed. Of course then he is cursed by having to find LH rifles.

There is actually a pretty good selection of LH rifles these days compared to the past and for anything a bit off the beaten path you could always get a new barrel screwed on a gun. A LH Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 would be an excellent choice for Noah.

Noah is getting pretty excited. We will go to the LGS today to see if we can find a decent rifle. I'm thinking a Tikka in a LH action in 7mm-08. This is pretty new to me; I'm wondering if this is some kind of a test arranged by saskboy and gerry. Why, oh why, are my wife, my daughter and five or six grandchildren left-eye dominant or left-handed! Even my primary hunting partner is left-eye dominant! Alas, I'll cope. I do want him to have the advantage of working with that which permits him to shoot naturally. It will be fun to work out the challenges. It is to the range this afternoon and again tomorrow for some extended work.

Sounds like a great time Mike. I know the boys going to be a natural anyhow. Specially once grandpa gets it tuned up nicely for him.

I'm looking forward to seeing him carrying whatever you come across. I'm pretty sure he's going to be crazy with whatever he picks out.

Wow Dr. Mike reading all your posts have given my the chills! I wish I had a gramps that hunted when I was a kid. I am self taught and didn't start hunting until 19 years of age.

I am so excited for Noah to pull the trigger and get to thank the Great Spirit for sending Mr Moose his way!

I wish you guys the best of luck!

My grampa hunted but like my dad he was a shotgun, bird-hunter kind of guy. I am the only one left who hunts with a rifle and revolvers, through most of the family except my kids. Two of my sons are hunters and one is a gun nut type.

My poor grand kids do not stand a chance in the Yuppy-Commie public schools that they go to. They are taught that their dads and grandpas are subversives and potentially wanton killers as gun owners. This all was news to me but what do I know about it?

Mike

Best of luck. I'm sure everything will fall into place.
I'm pulling for Noah and his fearless guide.

We spent the day at the range today. He is getting pretty good with a rifle. We bought a Tikka which is being rechambered and rebarreled to .260. We measured him for LOP and settled on a 22 inch barrel. It may mean an aftermarket stock later, but it will be his. This rifle should be ready within a month or so; he can still use it for elk and/or deer this fall. Now, I need to get to work for Zachary and Hannah. I do believe Noah is going to be thrilled.
