My Elephant Gun

Wow, that must be one heck of a rifle. Please post up a photo or two when you can!

What is a " 458 AccRel" ?

Regards, Guy

To make cases you use 375 rem ultra mag cases. There first run into a full sizer die with the decaping stem removed to set back the shoulder. Then trim to 2.550. Prime and charge with a load of fast handgun powder and fill the rest of the case with cornmeal. Seal the case with wax. In a safe area load into the rifle point up and fire. Wear a hat as it going to rain cornmeal. You can now have semi formed case to load. Loading can be mild (45/70) to wild (458 Lott) or there is a company that sell correct head stamped case. All in all it a fun round to have. Fits in a standard mag action that are easy to find and not need a lot rail work to feed. Clint

Sounds like a great rifle Clint.

Guy, I dig that big 375 of yours. Great hunting rifle.

I have only owned a .375 H&H, .340 Bee and 9.3x74R Mauser but it is a blast to own at least one big medium bore rifle just for the sake of owning one. Enjoy guys!

I have an elephant rifle. 1893 Mauser 7x57. That is what Bell used to kill most of his elephants with.

I almost bought a Ruger #1 in 458 Win mag just because it was really cheep. This fellow who could not shoot worth a hoot kept putting bad shots on deer so he got into his head that it was not his bad shot placement but the rifles he was using. He gets this 458 Win mag thinking "I have something that will just bowl a deer over" LOL. He has someone else sight it in for him and he goes hunting. Climbs into a hang on tree stand with it and the only smart thing he does is wear a safety harness. Here comes a deer and he shoots AT IT and that rifle knocks him right out of the tree stand and the safety harness saves him.

Delightful story, 1Shot. I've known a few people like that.

Well, it's not likely to see an elephant while in my hands, but it would do yeoman's work in Africa should I ever make it. This is my 9.3X64. Loaded with 300 grain Swift A-Frames or 286 grain Partitions, it delivers a pretty good blow to whatever I should hunt. I usually run 250 grain AccuBonds in it at just over 2700 fps.

1-Shot, that is funny as all get out about the fellow with the .458 Win Mag Number One!

Dr. Mike - great looking rifle. That's fit to hunt the world I'd think.

Regards, Guy

It could have been worse 1shot. I was talking to a guy who works at a local gunshop who told me about a guy who was coming to ak for a brown bear hunt, he called ahead and ordered a weatherby 460 mag and had the set it up with an expensive scope and even had them sight it in.

He picked it up when he flew into town and took it on a guided brown bear hunt. Apparently he wasn't familiar with shooting and put it up to his eye like a telescope and shot his bear. Talk about a scope bite!!! Luckily he hit his bear nene sure he was in no shape to make a follow up shot. Guess you can't buy smarts!

Another funny story! These people actually walk among us! And they vote!

That's the part I have trouble reconciling.
Sadly warning labels and liability lawsuits have taken the place of Darwinism.

I read where you were playing with this but never heard any more about it. So how does it shoot?

460 eye, double ouch. My hunting buddy did all the rifle sighting in for a gun shop that offered this service. This very rich fellow came to the store and ordered Weatherby 460, 340 & 300 rifles and had Zeiss scopes put on all of them. He was heading to Africa for 3 months to hunt. He wants the rifles sighted in so when he gets to Africa he will hopefully not have to do too much fooling with them to be right. My buddy is a retired Marine and has fired grenades off M1 Garands from his shoulder so he thinks this 460 with a Weatherby muzzle break should be a piece of cake. The scope had been bore sighted but he decides to remove the bolt and look through the bore then scope to really make sure things are lined up because the Weatherby factory ammo with 500 gr solids cost $10 each and even though the owner is rich my buddy did not want to shoot up a bunch of ammo unnecessarily. He has everything set up and settles into the rifle and begins his trigger squeeze and he said all of a sudden he felt like he got run over by a semi truck. When that thing went off it slid him almost off the bench seat that was made from a 3 foot long 2x8 with legs that he was setting on the front end straddled. His ear muffs and hat went flying off his head and his elbow of his shooting hand side knocked all the ammo boxes he had stacked up laying on the table off on the ground. He said that it kick much harder than he remembered the grenades off the M1 did. As to the target he had hit dead center at 100 yards where the fellow what it zeroed. He started not to shoot again but thought this guy wants things right. So he musters up the courage and said that it was REALLY HARD not to jerk the trigger but was better prepared for this second shot. Second shot was handled better and that bullet cut the first bullet hole. He went on to zero the other rifles and he said that compared to the 460 the 340 was like shooting a 243 and the 300 was like shooting a BB gun. While he was getting ready to leave the range this KNOW IT ALL, DONE EVERYTHING person that every range seems to have pulls in. My buddy already has the 340 and 300 cased up and in his truck but the 460 was still in the rack. KNOW IT ALL starts asking about it and talking about having had one and a bunch more lies my buddy knew he was telling so he decides to put him to the test. He ask if he would like to shoot this one, kind of putting him on the spot. He excepts the offer. When he shoots the rifle my buddy says it almost knock him off the bench and may have dislocated his shoulder. When he handed my buddy the rifle he called him a SOB went straight to his truck and left and even though this fellow would see my buddy often he never spoke a word to him till the day he died a few years latter. I just happened to be on my annual deer hunting trip at my buddies and was in the gun shop when the rich fellow comes in after having been on his Africa hunt. He killed about everything there and gave my buddy the one bullet that was recovered from his elephant as a thanks for zeroing his rifles perfectly. He shot his elephant 6 times with the 460. PH did not want him to brain shoot it. Made him shoot behind the shoulder. He said that he popped it 3 times broad side from right at 100 yards with 2 shots as it was running toward heavy bush. He reloaded quickly and heard what he said sounded like a train coming toward him through the bush. Elephant was charging and when it broke into the clear he quickly shot it two times in the chest and then raised up and shot it between the eyes and he said it looked like a train wreck. It stopped just a few yards from him. My buddy ask him how he handled the recoil of that thing shooting fast. He said "What recoil, when you have a few tons of angry beast coming down on you you feel nothing." The one recovered bullet was the one shot between the eyes that had traveled all the way through taking much of the spine out on it's way and was found right at the root of it's tail. The bullet just had a little smudge on the nose and the rifling marks. Probably could have loaded it up and shot it again. LOL All the other bullets exited, the two in the chest came out between the hind legs he said. 460 Weaterby Mag is shoulder fired artillery.

Wa-Hoo! That's quite the elephant hunt story! Cool! (y)

Seriously, thanks for posting that. Not all that many of our members tell of their African hunts, particularly dangerous game hunts. Good to get the first hand scoop, like when Mike or Gerry or Cheyenne tell of their grizzly hunts!

Česká zbrojovka assuredly does make some fine rifles, and their rifles built on the magnum 550 actions are among the finest to be had. They are both dependable and attractive.
