My hunting drought...

Well, I was looking at my preference points today and realized it's about time for me to take some vacation and hunt for myself. I have not been hunting big game for myself for the past four years (coming this hunting season), I have only helped family and friends (who seem to have great luck with my rifle, seems to be like borrowed fishing rods). I'm a resident in Colorado, and have a lot of points. I got a little depressed when I realized how many I have.

Currently I have the following:

Species Points Weighted Points Year
Pronghorn 11 0 2014
Deer 10 0 2014
Elk 9 0 2014
Bear 7 0 2014
Sheep 3 1 2014
Moose 2 0 2014

Bear, Elk, and Pronghorn I am confident where to go and get trophy animals. Deer, I am not sure about. My father drew a buck tag in a trophy area this year so I will see what he learns. We both agree it is a great area for big bulls and bear (where Dad got his last year); but I've not seen hardly any big deer in there. However, 2 of my buddies have taken toads in there. Any suggestions for CO mulie's?

Anyone else got the itch for hunting season??? I can't wait for it to come time to hit the woods!!!

I am waiting on the draws...
WY Antelope
MI Bear
MI Elk
Will buy OTC MI deer

Yeah, I can't wait.

Ha! I'm waiting for the OR draw and will buy another point for Wyoming this Summer. I'm just hoping I have the ability to hunt this Fall.

Either way, I will find something to hunt.

I have 12 points for Antelope so this should be the year :? Other then that I've got nothing really for points.

Well I did not draw for antelope or elk again this year so I'm hoping I can at least draw for dee. If I don't draw for deer, I figure Arizona can go to and I'll just do my New Mexico cow elk ranch hunt and call it good. I'm not getting any younger and if Arizona doesn't want to give me a tag once in a while, well to hell with them. Been here almost 36 years and have not drawn for antelope yet. :x Finally went to NM and got nice one there.

Wow I'm thinking Idaho is still better since they haven't gone to preference points. They've mismanaged the game to make the max cash, at the expense of game numbers, but there are still a few good places left if you can draw. I can't imagine being a resident and waiting that long to draw for something good unless it's a exceptional place to hunt. There are a few places here that have odds in the 1-3% range but there are good deer hunts in the 15-25% range as well. I put in for one of the latter :).

All my applications are in so I should find out if I drew something good by the first part of July. If not it's cow elk and general deer hunting again.

I have definitely been spoiled by living in British Columbia. Black bear, mountain goat, thinhorn sheep, bighorn sheep, whitetail, mule deer, elk, moose--all OTC. There are draws for goat and sheep, just as there is a draw for grizzly, but even these are not impossible to draw if you are willing to go to the less accessible areas. Think I'll stay put for the time being.

Yes, I have to echo DrMike regarding my hunting opportunities here in Saskatchewan. We have a regular season for Elk either sex along with a draw season for either sex Moose. We also have a regular season for Bull Moose long with Whitetail deer. We have a draw for Mulie which is usually a sure tag every 3 or 4 years. A few years ago our Antelope population was just about wiped out because of a disease and the draw has been cancelled for the time being.
I really feel sorry for the people that have to buy points and lease land to hunt. I sure hope that I never see that day here in Saskatchewan when I have to buy a hunting trip especially when our government pays out to landowners when wild life damages their crops.
PS. We also have two regular Black Bear seasons with two tags allowed.

Blessings,
Dan
