I just picked up from a friend a bolt action rifle cal. 30-06 that appears to be a 96 type action. problem is there are no markings, anywhere. It is nicely blued and has built in dove tails for a scope. Is there a method for sending a picture or two for id purpose's? Thanks in advance . Newysan

Measure the diameter of the reciever ring where the barrel mates up. The model 96 is a "small ring" and the model 98 or variant is a "large ring". The large ring mausers are a long action and can take the pressures of 30-06 and several larger cartridges but some models and years didn't have as hard of steel or heat treated. The model 96 was originally a 6.5x55 and handles lower pressured rounds well like 7x57, 257, 250-3000, etc and are not recommended for 308 based cartridges although some have done it, but it's risky imo. Also, the mauser 98 or variant "large ring" mauser has 3 lugs, 2 locking and 1 safety; the mauser 96 only has 2 locking lugs.

Pop Thanks for the info, but I do not have the time or desire to mess around with all the monkey business these "post it" sites offer. A simple attach with an e-mail is no problem for me, all this other stuff just wastes my time. The computer is handy and all and these forums are great but I have my limit. Somewhere I can just send a few pictures and be done would be a step in the right direction. Again thanks for helping. newysan Don't trust a government that does not trust you to own a gun.

Good luck with your Mysterious Mauser! If it's not too much trouble, you may want to get it headspaced, at least.

Yote I measured the receiver where the barrel joins and it measures 1.1750" approx. I then measured my FN 98 270 and it measures1.415" approx. The bolt in question has the long exposed firing pin indicator on the rear as does my old Swede mauser but it also has two locking lugs up in front near the bolt face and a locking lug towards the rear, like the 98 It also has a full length extractor. The back end of the receiver also has a dovetail slot, while the rear sights are on the barrel. I cannot accurately measure the bore diameter but it is very close to 30 with my simple tools. A 30-06 fit with no problem. The cartridges came with the rifle. I have some pictures I can send. Thanks again for the interest. Newysan

I would like to thank all the forum participants for their patience and expertise identifying this rifle. I will take the advice and have the head space checked as well as a good looky loo by a qualified gunsmith. This is one of the great beauties of the internet, tons of information that on this site is actually very useful. Again thanks! Newysan
