We did good as a group this yr, we got 3 for 4. No presentable/shootable does for Sam, saw a few but either with fawns or too far for an ethical shot.

I go out with my brother in law and his uncle in North central ND. I am blessed to hunt with them because they are much better hunters than I, they take pity on me and let me tag along. But in my defense, I know I can out shoot em.

I got a nice buck, a 4x5 and measures 16" inside to inside (I measured him this time instead of guessing an additional 2"), guesstimate on weight is appx 170+, not alot of fat on him as I am sure he has been "entertaining the ladies"....

Twas a good yr, not without hard work tho.. First two days, the OAT hovered around a high of +8 with a 20-30kt wind. Then on Sat evening, Dr. Mike sent a lot of snow our way. As a result, all the patterns/habits the deer had shown us the past couple of days, disappeared. I was dang near ready to say the heck with it an hour before I got my chance with this guy. No, I did not get him due to my fantastic hunting ability, all the credit goes to my b.i.l. & his uncle for sending him my way as I was posting with a very good rest for shooting. I was just in the right place at the right time. Regardless, Sam & I had an awesome time together, high quality daddy/daughter time. I even finished cutting up & packing the meat away for SausageFest 2011 by Monday evening.

Thanks for letting me share our story.

I've got more if you want it!

Sounds like a great year, Rod. Any time you get to spend time afield with family and friends, it is good. Taking game is the bonus that caps off a great time. I hope to get out tomorrow to see if I can tag a deer or two. The time is getting short. Our deer are really in full rut yet, which is somewhat unusual. But, then, it was unseasonably warm until a week ago. Now, we are in the deep freeze. It was -29 yesterday, but has warmed to -14 today. Consequently, a newspaper article appeared in Edmonton that stated that Alberta was the second coldest place on earth yesterday (only Antarctica was colder). How are you fixed on cold?

Rod that's a nice buck you got there. Sounds like you had a great time and that's all that matters. Well the nice fat whitetail doesn't hurt either! They sure eat good.......

Well Done there Rod. Sounds like ya had a good time. Pull a chair up to the fire and throw a trnderlion in the pan. You'll be fine for the winter....'til cabin fever sets in. Then you'll have to load up and go lookin for a yote! CL

WTG Rod. Sounds like things worked out quite well, well not for the buck I suppose. In my younger years "getting my deer" was the all important. Funny how things change as we grow older. Heck I enjoy watching deer as much or more as I enjoy shooting deer. In fact that is what my season has been about so far, watching deer.

Hope you all are having a great thanksgiving.

Sounds like a great time. We had hunters everywhere. Seems on every fence line there was a shack. Your experience sounds like lots more fun to me.

Larry, Longwinters, 6mm,

Yeah.. Had a great time with my kid. Lotsa cookies, noon naps, easy going fun. I grew up doing the brutal 1/2 & mile long deer drives thru the N. MN forests/swamps/river-bottoms, not unlike the UP. I sure do like this flat, agricultural based hunting land alot better. Uglier than sin, but productive and easy going..

Deer hunting for me now is about time with my kid, I pretty much gave up the hardcore hunting/fishing when they were born. Determined to spend "fun" time with them, not brutal, freezing, wet, do or die stuff, just whatevers fun for them is fun for me.

Hell, this is the first really nice buck I have taken since 1983, I was due and my kid was there with me... Super kool for sure.. I think she was excited as I...

We sure had fun..

Thanks.

Congratulations on a nice buck, and yes, hunting with the kids is much about fun. Fun, and teaching them the way of things. Looks like you're well on your way with both.

Great photos too.

Rod,

I think you have your act together. The children grow too fast as it is, and having quality time (eating cookies and naps) will never be regretted in later years. In any case, you got a great buck and shared the experience.

Amen on hunting with the kids or grandkids, it truly is a lot of fun. I actually miss it when I hunt and Jordan is in school. Great shot on the deer and it is a nice one. Don't you all just love hunting season

Great pics! I hope you printed some out for the scrapbook. In years to come both you and your family may come to treasure them.

Congrats on a nice buck Rod. Man, I have to hand it to you North Dakotans. Hunting in that kind of condition is not for the faint hearted.
