Neck Tension ?

OK,

This may appear to be a dumb question, and I think I know the answer, but I wish to confirm.

I'm going to pull a bunch of bullets and dump the powder. Pulling the bullets will change the neck tension. I'd rather not deprime these bullets.

I have a neck sizer and a full length resizer. Can I remove the depriming pin and get these cases resized to sufficient neck tension so that I don't have to deprime these cases?

I'm a little short on primers at the moment and hate to waste these.

Take your resizing die & withdraw the decap/expander rod inside the die 1/4". The effect will be you resize the neck without decapping the primer. You will still have to use lube, but not much if you just use the neck sizing die.

If you really want to have a more consistent neck tension after, use of the Lee Factory Crimp die will help with this. Some like it, some don't.
Good luck.

If your ammo as originally reloaded functioned fine then do as has been suggested, using the neck or FL resizing die, your choice. Personally, I would use the neck-sizing die, as I have done successfully for many years.

Best of luck,

I have pulled lots of them, recharged the case and seated bullets without running the case through the die. Worked great. If it was crimped, then I would run them through the sizing die.

I wonder what DrMike and Fotis say?

The neck tension will be lighter if you pull bullets and seat new ones without sizing. Lighter neck tension in many cases is a good thing but being able to duplicate it at a later date isn't easy. If you run a die that has a separate decaping pin, like RCBS, you can just remove it while you resize it or do as suggested and back the whole decaping/expander rod out so it doesn't come in contact with the primer.

I would pull 1 bullet, dump the powder, deprime the case (catch it when it comes out of the press, or at least with my Lee Classic I can catch a primer) resize the case however you normally prefer, and then reprime. I would start with one to make sure the primer will stay in the base, but I've done this before and it worked fine. But I normally use 30-06 Lapua cases with tight primer pockets.

If it doesn't work, you're only out 1 primer. Then you could think about removing the decapping pin and neck sizing only if it doesn't work.

While I don't reload lives primers as a habit, I did reseat a few as an experiment. They performed EXACTLY the same as all the other primers that were fresh from the box. I shoot all of my ammo over an Oehler 35P and verified that the reseated primers caused no change in velocity.

BTW - I have never had any problem depriming live primers. I think it is much safer then may be suggested.

Just something to consider.

Vince, it is usually sufficient to pull the decapping pin and neck size (to avoid punching the primer). It you do punch out the primer, so long as you don't crush the anvil, it can be reused. The neck tension is less when you simply reseat, making it difficult to reproduce what you shoot.

I have pulled many bullets and then resize with RCBS Neck sizer with out the pin. The purpose, as all are saying is to get the same neck tension as before. I tried to skip this step and some bullets seated "fine" and others I've been able to pull bullet out with my fingers. So this is telling me that the neck dimensions / elasticity is all over the place.
Go back and re-size the neck.
As far as punching out live primers, I've done it. I wear eye protection and sit further back, also do this step "gently" , just me others may be more confident.

Vince you failed to say if they were rifle or pistol cases but it really doesn't matter just pull the bullets and size the necks and reload. I just back the stem out on the sizing die so the decaping pin clears the primer.

Sorry I didn't say what it was.
I have some 30-06 and .338 Win Mag that I need to pull the bullets on.

I've pulled bullets and reseated new ones without running them back through the dies and they shot great. However, one thing that can happen is,if you load the same rounds in the magazine and fire a few rounds with these rounds in the magazine, the recoil may seat your bullets a little deeper.Just something to watch out for.
