Well the time has come to get #2 son a different size rifle. His 1st rifle was a Rem LSS Mtn in 7m-08. I love (and so does he) the caliber but the rifle is too small for him. He is 6'5" with the arms to match and that little LSS is just too small.

So I am goin trading this friday. Got that rifle and a Tikka (pre-T3) in 243. I am figuring that I will come home with one of 2 rifles plus or minus some cash. Rifle #1 is a Sako in 308. Rifle #2 is a Weatherby in 30-06. The Sako is new, the Weatherby in great shape (I know cuz a buddy of mine traded it in a while back). But the stock is scratched up so I would put a Medalist stock on it (same as Weatherby puts on their rifles from the factory).

But the difficulty is . . . I will give him his choice between the 308, 30-06 or a new Sako 270 I just got a month or so ago. He said that of the Sako's he would prefer the 308 over the 270. I thought that odd seeing as how he is going to go to school out in Wyoming after Highschool and will be doing some hunting out there.

So to prove my point that the 270 would give greater velocity etc.... I pulled out the Nosler reloading book to do a little comparing. Hmmmm . . . With 24" barrels Nosler shows the 308 as a smidge faster than the 270 if both are shooting a 150 gn pill. My other info shows that the 270 with a 130 gn pill still has greater recoil than the 308 with a 150 in a same weight rifle. Hmmmmmmmm I wonder if he has been studying up without me knowing about it.

I will really be curious which he picks.

Long,

Have your son take a look at the ballistics of the 280 Rem. With handloads, it offers the best of both worlds. 7mm bullets have a higher BC and shoot as flat as the 270 Win. Heavier bullets like the 160 g rare great for elk.

I have a Sako in 280. Love it!!!! But he does not want one. Seems to be leaning towards a 30 cal. Either 308 or 06. Will have to see how the trading goes on Friday.

Long,

I know you are a 280 fan, thought your son would follow in your footsteps.
If he wants a 30 cal, don't forget the 300 WM. You can load it down to 30-06 levels for most hunting and have one heck of a long range elk buster.

Good luck at the trade.

If you're trying to get a rifle physically big enough for the little 6'-5" fella, consider keeping the same rifle and putting it in a custom-ordered stock from McMillan.

Most production sporter rifles have stocks a little short for me - so I ordered my McMillan with an extra 1" length of pull. Made the rifle perfect for me!

McMillan will build the stock pretty much any length you want it, and can also make a lot of other custom changes if desired.

.308 is good for young and old and I have had one sence I was young and now I'm old. Can't beat it.

I gotta say, I am more pumped about picking up a new rifle than I think the boy is. At this point he would rather play his Accoustic guitar than go to the range. Cannot say I necessarily blame him . . . it is real nice hearing folk style guitar music around the house. No words, no loud noises just mellow music.

But on the other hand I really enjoy the blast of a rifle shot. And since I will probably be the one loading the cartridges and test shooting the rifle I may just . . . naw I can't do that. I will pick out what he wants. Not what I would want.

Well, the deed is done. Picked up the Sako in 308. Brought it home and told son #2 to pick either that or the 270. Surprisingly he went with the 270. That suits me just fine. Although I gotta say that the stock on the 270 was nicer. But I think he liked the longer rifle lighter trigger and smoother bolt ( Its been shot close to a hundred times now is a little smoother ).

I hope he enjoys it.
