I bought a set of shooting sticks to shoot my encore handgun from.
My question is I'am having a hard time keeping the gun steady, am I doing something wrong or do I just need to keep practiceing shooting from
them?

Thanks

They're not a perfect rest. Are you steadier with or without the shooting sticks?

I use 'em sometimes too - with my rifle - but realize they're not the same as shooting from across my backpack, or off a stable rest. They sure are nice though when I need something that helps, quickly.

Practice a bit more - it might help. Did for me.

I'm with Guy, practice, practice, practice. I have a pole cat for my Encore handgun and still need a ton more practice myself.

One thing that might help is to buy a snap cap for you Encore and practice with the stick and dry firing.

A freind of mine who uses shooting sticks says if you lean your back against a tree while sitting down the sticks are pretty steady but getting into that position for hunting situations can be easier said than done. I agree with the practice practice practice. I've hunted with a pistol enough to tell you that without a good rest accuracy is iffy at best

Just keep at it and practice. Try tweeking your position until you will find a comfortable and steady position with shooting sticks. Then practice, practice and practice.

I have been using them for a couple of years now and am just starting to get pretty comfortable with them. I do alot of dry firing in different positions to find what works best. By that I mean try this....

Place the sticks so they are straight up and down, then try having the top of the sticks where the gun rests angled back towards you or away from you. Both of those positions will help lock the gun in a little tighter, at least for me. I have also moved the stock forward and back to find a spot that is more steady.

I know you said you were shooting a handgun and you won't have much room to mover forward and back, but try the angle thing. Also play with the height of the sticks, for level ground a mark on the sticks helps get there each time, the tricky part is when you need to fire up or down hill.

Good luck. Lefty.

I have been using Stoney Point shooting stix with my Contender pistol. I must admit it is not as steady as I would have thought. Of course the black bear coming into my bait does not mind cuz he always comes in after I leave  .

Maybe this weekend I will get a buddy and we will do the two in and one out trick . . .

Anyway, with somemore practice and perhaps a piece of innertube tied across the "Y" of the shooting stix steadiness will improve.
