BB's or plastic balls are used to assure that the graphite is evenly distributed and transferred unto the brass surface from a coating on the BB's.

I am very interested in this , how do you know how much graphite to add ?

Regular graphite or extra fine ?

Yes, they are both minerals, Mica is cleaner but does not have the lubricity of Graphite. If you are using a carbide sizer, it may not matter. With a steel sizer button, I would definitely use graphite.
