NEW 257 cal E-Tip

You know what!
A tempest in a teapot is more deserving of attention than a minute of differences in BC unless you are planning on being in on the Camp Perry matches this year. It is good to have a quarter bore that is Kalifornia and soon all the satelite states approved by the (environmenataly correct, bought and paid for, politicians.
Thank You Nosler
We will all soon be shooting non lead. We can't stop the misguided movement :?

Not bad for a light bullet! Now, if I can get about 3,550 with my 25-06AI
with this bullet & 3600 with the 100BT, the drop #'s are virtually idential
out to 700yds with a 50fps difference & max of 1 windage click diff, that is if I can have the same zero. I could use the E-Tip for Deer/Hogs in the woods & out to 200yds.
& BT for longer than that plus all Target/Varmit shots.

I was thinking of the 115BT all-round, but these 2 could be an interesting alternative.

I will certainly be looking for these when they are finally available in Canada. I verified that they are not listed on any of the suppliers here yet, but I have my order on file so that as soon as they are available I will secure a good supply for my 257 Bob.

looking forword to loading up some in my weatherby, plus curious to how close to performance of barnes tsx. 8)

I will be testing this bullet in my 257 Roberts shortly for accuracy, penetration and expansion. I am looking forward to the testing and results.

Ordered three boxes to test in my 257 Roberts. It looks to be just the ticket for that cartridge.

The real test is on game and that is when I will take notice of the bullet, because I have done paper and penetration test on bullets like the TSX and in the field using it for over four years in five different cartridges I found the TSX disappointing. Because of that I do not use them anymore. The field test on game will be the day of judgement. Although your test will be interesting and not only accuracy but velocity.

3-26-10

Final range test for .25 caliber 100 grain E-Tip this morning with slight wind and 35 degrees. Prior to the trip scrubbed the barrel thoroughly. Not a trace of fouling. This rifle is unique from any other that I own. It will not shoot well when clean. Shot one fouler chronographed at 3400 FPS, exactly.

Fired a total of three (3), three (3) shot groups. First group 1.5" all speeds well into 3400 area. Second group was about 1.25" with the same range of speeds. Third group was two shots in the same hole and one flyer .390" inches out. The average speed with the fouler was 3440 FPS.

The load was Norma brass (new), 100 grain Nosler E-Tip, 73.5 grains of H1000 touched off by Federal Gold Medal 215 Magnum primers. Overall cartridge length is 3.175"

Tried three rounds with 74.0 grains of H1000 and there was no increase in speed and the group opened up to 1.0"

Rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard, Sage finish composite stock topped with a VX II 4-12X40 with fine duplex crosshairs.

This combination is a winner with the only thing lacking is a field test on a coyote.

it also sounds as if you have 2 257 wby rifles as I believe u previously talked about 85 grs out of a 26 inch pipe

so question is have you ever shot the same load over the chrono throu the 26 inch gun and the 24 inch gun and what difference was noticed?

nitis,

Actually have three (3) .257's. The first is a Ruger M77 VT, heavy 26" barrel. Bought it new, never fired it. Tore it apart and had it re-chambered in .257 Weatherby Magnum. Have to have the bolt face opened up. Removed numerous pounds of wood especially in the forearm and pistol grip area. Replaced magazine follower with one designed for the .416 With this rifle I shoot 85 grain Nosler Ballistic Silvertips over RL19 with speed just over 3800 FPS. It has shot several one hole three shot groups at 100 yards. The real cool part is that several of these groups have been witnessed at the Gun Club.

It is sighted in at three hundred yard zero and only drops 17 inches at 500. Absolutely shoots like a laser and kills like lightning. Glass is a Leupold VX II 6-18X40 with fine duplex.

The second is a Weatherby Mark V that belongs to my oldest son. I worked up a 110 grain AccuBond load for it last summer. 7828SSC pushes it at 3400 FPS with 1.0" accuracy.

The third is the Weatherby Vanguard mentioned earlier.

When I first started loading the .257 I tried seating the bullet out as far as possible. There is about half an acre of freebore and I could not get anywhere near the lands. I read an article by Layne Simpson about the .257 and he said that best accuracy was found at or near factory length. The accuracy I was getting was horrible. I went to the store with calipers and measured some. Some were 3.17" and some were 3.18" so I split the difference. I have stuck with that length in all three rifle and it works.

I might try the 100 grain E-Tip in the Ruger, nicknamed Rugby, but I usually stay with one load, one rifle. It helps me get more rifles and keep my safe full.

The only negative about the Rugby is that fully dressed with sling and ammo it weighs one ounce under twelve (12) pounds. Not exactly a nice carry rifle, but completely knocks the snot out of a coyote.

I'll let you know about the 100 E-Tip out of the Rugby over the chronograph
