I have a p-17 in 30-06 new boyd stock glass bedde free floated . But Iall ready have a 308 and was looking for something diffrent like a 35 wheelen or a 338-06. with 35 I can get 225 at about 2700 and 338-06 at 2500 to 2600. my question is does anybody have these and if so what vel for 225 bullets. my rebuild would be a 26 tube. Just food for thought.

Either cartridge would make a great rifle. I have a 35 Whelan, and my hunting partner frequently carries a 338-06. Each cartridge has some strong points, and either will work very effectively on large game. There is perhaps a wider selection of bullets available for the 33s than for the 35s, but I have about twenty different bullets on my reloading bench in 35 calibre, which offers a good selection to choose from. Either cartridge is very effective on elk and/or moose, and certainly adequate for large grizzlies. Ergo, anything smaller is more than easily handled by either of these calibres.

With 225 grain bullets I am witnessing 2500 to 2600 fps in my Whelan, which is not yet fully broken in. I do not anticipate much more velocity than that with this rifle. So 2700 fps with a 26 inch tube does not seem unreasonable. I would anticipate slight more velocity than you suggest with a 338-06.

Just out of curiosity, why a 26 inch tube? Is the anticipated increase in velocity sufficiently important to justify the additional length?

I would go with a 35 whelan, just cause I have always wanted a .35 cal.

What vel are you getting in the 338-06 with 225.
The 26" tube was just a thought it . It would probobly be 24 or 22 just because I was thinking of a goo heavey timber gun for elk and moose shots under 300-250 yards.

Either would work great. Never been, or will be, a 338 fan so I would opt for a 35 Whelen. .... My choice.

Now If I were building one I would opt for a 22" barrel max (your 26" proposal would add minimal velocity and generate some unwieldiness).

For scope 2.5x8 leupy or 2x7 of same brand.

My M700 Classic 35 Whelen has a 22" barrel and shoots the 225 gr AB at 2700 fps with 60.0 grs RL 15.
I think a 22" barrel would be a better choice than the 26" in the 35 Whelen.

While I love both cartridges mentioned and own both that action just screams for a big bore if you are going to rebarrel it. I'd look at a .375 H&H for that 1917 action at a minimum. If I have to stick with your orginal choices I'd take the .338-06, just because of the slightly better bullet selections.

I thought of a 375 in a scout but you have open up the bolt face and rework rails were if i stay 30-06 case it leaves more opions. I can not remeber who showed the pic of 375 scout in the p-17 action but that is what got me thinking about this new project . I am going to go with the 35 whelen 22 tube.

Good choice.....BTW you can have lots of fun with 10 grains of Unique and any 357 pistol bullet!

I was going to say go 9.3X62mm, but the option of shooting pistol bullets is a great way to keep shooting for cheap. Can't do that with a 9.3X63.

I know it is only because I just bought a 358Win and it shoots so good that I would say 358Win, but after this coming hunting seasons I hope I will have a lot more to say about a 358Win. If it kills half as good as it shoots it will be something.

Of course a 30-06 moving a 220gr bullet at 2510fps which I have done with mine and shot and inch group with this load is nothing to sneeze at. In fact will be testing it again this week and believe with out pressures can get an average of 2550fps. Getting a 200gr bullet to get close to 2680-2710fps is also a project I will be trying this week. All for the fun of it.

Also, for fun trying IMR4320 in my 358Win again looking to see how the new charge works.
