What a paradise! Thanks for sharing the pictures and excitement about elk hunting. Elk-o-holism, it's the Pandemic of hunters everywhere.

Elk-o-holism

And now we know there is a name for this malady! May it never be cured. May it infect many others before I'm forced to leave this terrestrial orb.

When Quebec separates, maybe the west (including Manitoba) would like to join the US? I only live about 300 yards from Canada now.

Kelly,
I use to live in Loveland, moved to Tennessee 4-yrs ago. Those Pics are great, looks like Rocky Mountain National Park too. I took alot of pics there, awesome place. Really miss it. Your rifles look nice. Good looking Bull you shot. What Unit did you hunt that year?

Don
Don,

Sorry it took so long to reply. Been real busy as of late.

I think Loveland is a pretty cool city. Actually wished my job and house was down that way. The pics of the 5x5 bull and big 6x6 plus the 3 Bighorn sheep were indeed taken in RMNP. The other 4 sheep were actually over on the western slope and they were digging around in a mineral lick in a parking lot. Sadly I'm under the impression its likely those rams possible died during a nasty blizzard back in 07/08. They also had many die from brain worm in the area.

Although I won't post the exact Unit, I will say I do hunt around the Gunnison basin and have been for 22 years. Will be again this year as we drew our tags again for 1st rifle season.

A definate welcome Neighbor ! Great looking pics - Elk & Sheep definately two on the tops of my list.
But those last pics.... a Remington without a scope.....????
Thanks for the welcome neighbor! Wonderful state we live in!

The one without the scope is actually scoped now and is another picture posted here somewhere. Dropped a VX3 3.5-10x40 on it.

Rod,

Thanks. I agree, not many factory rifles as classic as the Rem 700 BDL.

Greg,

Very true what you say. Elkoholism is not pretty and there is no known cure. Ask anyone that knows me and I'm sure they'll tell you I've got one of the worst cases ever! lol

Kelly,
Didn't mean to pry, not at all, your response is as mine when people ask. I do respect that. The general area was my question. I have hunted the Gunnison Basin many times, packed into wilderness 10-miles on horses. Took a few animals from there. That is some Big Country right there and got to have your butt in shape to hunt it properly too. It sure is 300 mag. territory.

Good luck this season and be safe.

Don,

Sorry about that I didn't mean to come off as I did, but it seems you understood my underlying intent. I'm only sour on giving out Unit info nowadays after having been screwed over by a friend recently. That's another story for another time.

You are right though, it is huge country and offers so many hunt options. We don't have access to horses so we got to hunt via foot after getting to a good parking spot via 4x4. I'm at a crossroads right now as my dad, and cousin are having age issues and mobility is getting harder for them. Need to find a way to gain them access that doesn't kill them in the process. Choices are slim as its either ATV or Horses. The new Travel Management plan in the basin has 500+ miles of 4x4 access being closed off while only 12 miles or so of ATV trails are being shut down. Tough decision as we don't particularly like ATV's for accessing the back country. Wilderness is somewhat limited in the new spot we hunt and its easy enough to get in via foot for those of us in shape.

Need to do some load work for the .300WM and 180 Gr. Nosler Partitions, but other than that its ready to go. Also have the .270 dialed in and seeing as how it popped my biggest bull to date I'm pretty excited about my options. lol

I saw somewhere else you applied in CO. Did you draw your tags?

Kelly

Kelly, those are some great BDL's for sure. I love the 300WM and think you are going to like it even more with 180-200gr PT's. I have bumped into the 200gr weight range for my 300WM. It can still do 2900+ with 200's and man, it offers alot of insurance to big bone hits.

Great point about the ATV's. I guess if you use them as you would horses and stick to the trails, it is a great option to get your pops into the backcountry for many years to come. I have never hunted elk where you could use quads, but I imagine in the right area, they are very useful.

Did you put the 3.5x10 on the 300? Man, I can't wait for the range reports from your loads. I think we have just the load to get you ready with the 180's. I think you said you already have some RL22 also, right? Scotty

Thanks Scotty.

One thing that kind of sucks about CO is the amount of ATV/Road access you have in some places. I've hiked for a couple hours only to find I've landed close to a trail that isn't marked on the map with tons of traffic. It happens. What stops me from going the horse route is I nothing about them. The one guy in our camp that did will no longer be hunting with us so we have no one to teach us.

No, that VX3 is on the .243 and rightfully so. My .300WM has a Leupold 100th anniversary scope on it in 3-9x40 and has the LR reticle. I've got RL22 but a well known gun writer was talking about running into some pressure issues in extreme temp changes. That bothers me as CO taught me that a 60-70 degree temp swing over a few days isn't impossible and sometimes to be expected. 3 years ago we'd have highs of 65 degree's during the day and low's of -10 or so by morning. So before I dink with the RL22 I want to do some more research and find some middle ground for loads.

Kelly, I have had the same problem in Utah with ATV trails where they are not supposed to be. Plus, people riding in designated wilderness areas where they are not supposed to be.

You might consider switching to one of the Hodgdon "H" powders. They are now compounded to be more temperature neutral. I must say however, that I never have really had any issues with IMR powders, even in Wyoming, with hugh temperature swings.

Charlie,

ATV abuse in CO has long been a big issue. Having said that, most are very respectful and to be honest you never get bothered by them. Over the last 10 years CO and the NF service have been studying all major forests and are now instituting Travel Management plans accordingly. This is a nice change for the most part.

I've got IMR 4350, H 4350, RL22 and H4831 for powders. Was just buying them up when I could get my hands on them as long as I had loads in the Nosler #6 for the cals I own. I'm still needing to wrap up my load work for the .243 then I'll move on to the .270 and .300WM. Need to load up Partitions for both before elk season rolls around.

As usual, great pics, Kelly!

Makes me antsy to start doing load work for my .257 Bob and my 300WSM!

Hey! Easy now!

:)

The '06's pillars are about done. Can't get any stinkin' time to work on them lately, but should be able to finish it MAYBE this week so that I can shoot it weekend after next.

I need to order the dies for the 257. Might do that sooner than later. I have brass, primers, and powder. I just need dies and bullets.

Lol.

I'm sure that 06 project will be done soon enough. Summer is coming so I'm sure things will slow down some.

Maybe, we'll see.

Despite me not being a Remington guy, though, I gotta say those 700's do look pretty darn nice.

Whatever would you do if a stray Model 70 followed you home one day?

Remington BDL's have always had a classic look to them in my eyes.

I really want a M70 to follow me home someday! I pray every night one will magically show up in my safe! lol J/K

I guess at the time I bought all my rifles M70's weren't an item one saw very much.Obviously the .243 was a gift and not a rifle I bought but one I truly wanted. All Win70's were used and FN hadn't started to sell the new versions. So it was either Pre-64's or doing tons of picking and choosing for a New Haven.

Seriously Tom, in the time and place I grew up, all aspiring elk hunters had 3 makes of rifles on their dream ownership list. Browning A-Bolt's, Rem 700 BDL's, and the venerable Win. Mod 70. The latter two being the most sought after.

I've still got a deal in place with Walt. Just won't be until Jan. till I can complete same.
