New Rifle-30-06

I have to agree with Mike. I had a 700 BDL that I put 6k rounds through so I had it rebarreled. I also had a 742 Carbine. The 30-06 is a great round and its really all you need to hunt NA. I really like the 7mm's and the 338's so that is the direction I went.

I cut my teeth on the 30-06 so I imagine one day I will go full circle and have one in my safe again.
Guess I am a gun nut loonie.

I have had more hand guns than I can remember. I have 6 1911s 2 S&W a Hammerlli and a TC contender with numerous barrels I guess that makes me a pistol loonie gun nut. But then the post is about the 30-06.
My father only owned one rifle all his life and it was a Winchester model 70 pre war in 30-06.

I had one, a CZ 550 FS, Mannlicher stock. I sold it and bought another Featherweight, vowing I'd never need another .30-06. Then, in 2008, when Winchester released their first offerings from the SC plant, I fell in love with the wood on a Featherweight chambered in .30-06. Yeah, it followed me home and found a place in my safe. I had to buy dies and brass all over again. It shoots quite well and performs pretty much like a .30-06. I doubt I'll let it go anytime soon.

My first .30-06 was a Sear's Special, Springfield 03-A3 Sporter for less than $100. My relationship with the .30-06 is strange. I have owed: Rem 725, Win 70 1937 Carbine, Pre War 70 rifle, Pre-64 Featherweight, Post 64 (1970) 20 inch Mannlicher Carbine, plus several XTR's and USRAC's. I hunted with .30-06's extensively through my 20's. Then I bought a .338 for elk and started using my .270 and 7mm Mag for deer.

I presently own a 1995 Winchester (USRAC) Sporter which has been upgraded which I bought new in 1995. I have only shot one elk and maybe 5 or 6 deer with it in 18 years. I mostly used other calibers but I don't know why? They weren't any better, or worse than the .30-06? Oh well, one of life's many mysteries? Plus, my Winchester Model 70, .30-06 is one of my most accurate rifles.

My first was a sportsman's 78. Like a fool I sold it! What a tackdriver!

Yes, the 30-06, great cartridge and most everybody has one or has owned one and that is the reason to get one. You don't have as many 30-06 rifles sold because it is not a good cartridge. It is never a mistake to own one and hunt with one. I do not find the 06 boring, but I love the 06. I love the bullet choices I have when reloading. The ammo choices that can be purchased in so many places. I love the authority it has in dispatching game and if load correctly will make small exaggerated holes in your target at 100yds and I have killed with it out to and just over 600yds. I have killed a large variety of game with the 06.

Savage, Marlin XL7, Tika, Remington have very good entry level rifles. Looking forward to the make and model you choose in the great 30-06 cartridge.

So spires5d,

I guess I was bored tonight and I tallied up people’s advice on this thread. The brand/counts are as follows (several people voted for more than one brand):

5 for the Winchester M70
5 for the Remington 700
4 for the Marlin XL7
4 for the Savage w/Accu-trigger
1 for the Ruger American Rifle
1 for the Ruger Hawkeye
1 for the Stevens 200
1 for the Thompson Center ICON
1 for the Tika

And EVERYONE loves the 30-06!!!

Hey, cool, glad you did that and yes the 30-06 has earned the love folks have for it. Once again, thanks for the count.

I find it most fascinating on the 180 Savage pulled in terms of reputation. You couldn't pay someone to own a Savage in the mid 80s. Now they seem to get the nod in almost every gun recommendation conversation. To be up there w/Winchester and Remington is quite a feat.

They earned it through making an accurate rifle and continued to improve th product. My 116 FHSS WAS a tack driver and put together well. You can view the review I did on th 116 at AmmoGuide.com and look under Articles and Downloads.

Savage Arms has recently been acquired by TDK. TDK also owns Speer, CCI, Weaver, et cetera.

...if you decide to spend a little more money on a Rem 700, buy a Tikka T3. There are a lot of good reasons not to buy one of cheaper Mod. 700's...

Those cheap 700s can shoot but they are definitely not the smoothest rifle. Remington really should ditch that stock though.
