Did a little trading today.
Out went a real nice old FN-270 that I will miss haveing but was quite heavy and i will not miss carying it at all.
In came a not as prety but just as cool old Ruger #1RSI. 30,06.
Its an old #1 that has the pink recoil pad. Its a we bit scrathed up but not bad , and came with a neet old leather sling that says ruger on it.
I put together a couple loads one with a 165gr Speer hot core and IMR-4350 , and some 180 grain Partitions over RL-22.
I will be shooting it instead of my .257 Roberts AI.

Sounds like a neat rifle. I just got my #1 yesterday also. I love the lines and looks of those rifles !

Nice! Congratulations.
Let us know how she shoots.

Ruger #1s are not light at all.
But the 2 ,I have are not at all heavy either. I have no way to actualy weight them but I am guessing about 7 to 7.25 lbs.
that is not light but they are vary compact and My 1-A in 7X57 feels light when you carry it.
Remember the #1 has no bolt section so the reciever is only a couple inches long , and the barrel being 20 inches on my RSI brings the whole package to just a shade over 3 FT long. The front swivile is near the muzzle making it easy to haul in thick timber as it does,nt stick up over my head. And of course the actions are so strong you can beef the loads up prety stiff.
Now the 1Bs and Hs are quit heavy.
Now in the H's you want the weight to help tame recoil. And in the Bs you have a 26 inch barrel in a rifle that is still prety short.
Somthing I have wanted for a long time is a Ruger #1 in .257 weatherby in a 28 or mabye a 30 inch tube.
I have a frend who has some custom 1s most are long barreld and chaberd for .308 based rounds.
He gets 3100 FPS with a 270X.308 and 130s.
I would want to go another roubt myself, Maximize powder capacity for a givin bore with out going to crazy overbore.
Mabye a 270 STW ?
Lest give that 130 grainer about 3500.
That would be fun ! If it can be done

Classy rifle compact and should be very svelte! Congrats.

tjRoberts,

I have one of those old FN Mausers in 270 as well. As you say its a heavy gun. I have only had it for a few years and have no real use for it except to try out some load at the range. Perhaps I will trade it as well.

I got into Ruger #1's for deer hunting back when there were lots of deer in VT or at least I could find them! These days my #1a is resting. :)

Savage, I did prety well on mine, I was in it 520 sold it for 700 , and a guy is comming tommorow to buy my .270 reloading stuff for 65.00.
Its a good rifle and very classy but i have a few of those that get no use.
Can't afford that anymore.

tjRoberts,

Your post got me dreaming of taking the old FN around to some shops and to see what they say on an asking price as consigned.

While I have less into it than you the front base is not drilled and tapped perfectly straight and I think the rifle has a headspace issue.

I just got its handloads out and I had to use sized down 280 Rem. brass to fill the 270 Wins. chamber.

I think for now I will put the topic aside as to what to do with the rifle.

Here is data for the 6.5 & 257 STW. I believe the 270 STW is a bit less common.
There is also the 278 Ultra JGS version has a 30 degree shoulder and there was a custom version of it in a 44 degree that was supposed to be doing 4000FPS with 130 grn BT's, but I gotta say I am quite skeptical about that. I don't doubt the chrony, but I would put an pressure instrument to use before saying it can do it within a reasonable pressure range.

NOTES: All powder charges are maximum and should be reduced by 12 percent for starting loads. Cases for .257 STW and 6.5 STW formed by necking down Remington 7mm STW brass; .358 STA case formed by necking up 8mm Remington Magnum brass and fire-forming with a reduced powder charge. All rifles had 26-inch barrels.

Take note that the 6.5mm with 140 grn Partitions is only about 400FPS faster than a 264 wm.........

I researched that 278 AI and it's 3800FPS. The 277 Allen Mag is right around there too 140 grn AccuBond @ 3750. It's pretty quick. The Allen Mags are availible thro Kirby Allen. He has a reputation for building very accurate rifles and reasonable pricing. The AI is propreitary and not availible.
