Been trying to track down a rifle with zero success so I may have to build one.
What ROT have any of you found to actually stabilize the 40 gr bullet?
Is there a ROT that would work good for basically all of the 22 cal bullets to a respectable level of accuracy. Some bullets would work better than others but to a level of decent shooting across all weights.

223 WSSM in a certain platform is the rig I'm trying to track down and if I have to custom bbl one then so be it. I just want to make sure I got a ROT that will work fairly good across the spectrum.

This cart/ bullet weight combo might not work regardless because of hitting way too much speed.

Either way...input on the ROT for this cal would be super.

Thanks

Well first of all I would get no slower than a 1-12 but would probably go 1-9. The 223WSSM is a rocketship and is very capable of throwing a 55BT @ 4000. I wouldn't go any lighter than that personally. Using a 40 I don't know if it would make it out the barrel. If you get a 1-9 or a 1-8 you should be able to use any bullet that doesn't burn up inside and go all the way up the 90 grainers avalible.

I had one of the first 223 WSSM rifles in a Model 70 and I believe it had a one in 10 twist. It shot bullelts from 40 to 60 grains all about the same, that is to say, lousy.

I shot 40 grain Ballistic Tips over 4400 fps and never had any fail to reach to target. Heck, factory 55 grain Winchester ammo would make 3950 fps and this was in a 22 inch barrel.

The problem was that the Winchester Super Shadow Super Light or whatever the heck it was called was simply innaccurate and erratic as all get out. I would go to the range and work up a load that I thought had good potential only to find out on the next range session it would not shoot into 2 inches. The final straw was when I was testing it with factory ammo and was getting about 1.25 inch groups. I decided this would do since this was to be a coyote rifle. So, I cleaned it and then was going to sight it in for that ammo. Heck, I never hit the target frame again that day.

The rifle was sent back to Winchester and they sent out a whole new rifle. That one was as bad as the first. It was sent back and they sent yet another rifle-same story. It had to be the chrome lined barrel. That gun was rebarreled with an aftermaket barrel and made into a 243 WSSM and it shoots great.

So, if you want a 223 WSSM I would highly recommend having one built. Amazing cartridge, just what I wanted for coyote calling. Oh well.
