OK, I need some help please!

I shot 3 other OAL's, and all stayed at or under 2".

I'd really like to get more speed, but this is enough recoil for her for now. I feel ok with the ballistics on this out to 150 for her on whitetails, with some careful shot selection. Hopefully she won't have to shoot that far.

I am hopeful, though, that next season she will be able to stretch out to 200-300 yards if needed, and be running the same bullet in the 2600-2900 range. That kind of load ought to really slap down deer, but I don't think she's ready for the recoil yet. She will be with practice.

I'll be waiting to finish the job when I sit with her. I'll probably have my 300WSM, but may bring the 264 or 270. If she scores a hit on a deer and it's not down and still, it's getting shot again. I've done this before, and didn't like watching the deer run in the end. The 300WSM is shooting a 180PT at 2975, the 264 is shooting a 140AB at 3250 (and change), and the 270 is shooting a 150BT at 2960. Any of them should conclude the matter promptly if called upon to do so.

A 120gr whacking into a deer broadside at 2200fps will do the job with horsepower to spare.

That's 1290fpe at the muzzle and still right at 1000 at 150yds. Plenty for a deer if she hits it in the right spot.

Should still expand out to 150 yards properly. H 4895 has got to be one of the most versatile powders in existence.

You aren't kidding. I really like the stuff.

Ever since Scotty clued me in the Hodgdon's page about using H4985 for reduced loads, I've used it for my daughter for first the 257 and now her 7mm.

Her rifle is a total joy to shoot. I really like that sporter, and I hope she gets to take many animals with it.

Now I'm just trying to figure out where she and I will hunt on the opener on 11/30. One more range trip should finish up her rifle and then get her a chance to shoot it. I am really hoping one of the bucks I've seen in bow season appears. Junior hunters have no antler restrictions (adult hunters may only take bucks with three points or more on one side), so she has more potential targets than most of the hunters in the immediate vicinity. And there are a few pretty decent 8's knocking around too.

I'm guessing out to 150 yards she can still punch one of these through a shoulder bone? Whatever she shoots will also be in my crosshairs with the safety off, just in case.

Megan's first shot with her new rifle....

She was throwing them wide left, till we did a little trigger control work, then she dumped a shot spot on target, about 1-2 bullet width's above the 1" high mark, putting it awful close to 1.5" high that I want, and cutting the vertical grid line that was the center of her aim point. After that shot, I put the rifle away and said we were done. I like to end on a good shot so she feels confident with her shooting.

I goosed the load up a couple grains, so she's shooting 40gr of H4895 under a 120BT, making around 2350-2400fps and carrying 1000ft/lbs to juuuuuuuust shy of 200 yards. I'll let her shoot to 150-175, depending on the situation, hope for shots in the 50-100 yard range that are more usual for us.

I'll be backing her up with either my 35 Whelen, 300WSM, or 270 Winchester. I was going to use the 264, but...well..... yeah. That one is going to be in dry dock for a good while now, unfortunately.

She looks as if she has the hang of it, Tom. I do detect a smile creeping across her face after the shot.
