Well I wound up with a christensen arms hunter in 300 rum. I already have a 300 rum and if I am going to have a rifle that cost that much I want to be able to use it a lot. So help me pick a caliber. See I talked tto teh guys at C arms and they said I could exchange it but the hunter model is just a sps with the barrel turned down and wrapped. So I got to get an sps caliber.

I am really leaning towards another 25.06 great dual purpose rifle for yotes and deer. Especially these california deer

What I have already
300 rum
7mm mag
270 wsm
25.06
243

Darned if I know... I see five deer cartridges and three that I'd feel real comfortable with for elk. Push come to shove, I'd hunt elk with any of 'em, but I'd rather limit it to the big three there.

You've already got a lot of overlapping capability there... What will the new rifle do that your existing rifles won't?

Since you are leaning toward a rifle for yotes and deer, that pretty well settles the question. The 270 WSM is certainly overkill for coyotes, but it will do the job with careful bullet selection and handloads. The 25-06 is likely the best choice. Great dilemma.

The other thought would be a 22-250 for varmints and predators or a 375 H&H or RUM for the big critters.

Of course, the SPS also now comes in 257Wby, I think. Maybe only in the stainless model, but it would be worth a look. A quick rundown of the available SPS calibers shows your choices to be pretty wide, though all have some overlap with what you currently have in the rack. You could get a 308Win, which would be a classic deer round with excellent accuracy potential. Not such a great coyote rifle. Or you could get a 30-06, with the same basic plusses and minuses. Going a little smaller, the 270Win and 7mm-08 offer a little better utility versus coyotes and varmints, and are certainly still plenty capable of taking white-tails and such. On the same line of thinking that JD had, you have the 223Rem option for strictly varmints. Or, as an interesting and different choice, the SPS is available in 17Rem Fireball. That's a heck of a varmint round, easy to shoot a lot, and something interesting to have in the rack. Or, you could trade out for a 7mmRUM - which would overlap a lot with your 7mmRemMag, but offer a decent gain in velocity over the RemMag.

One other option, if you have the money, is to keep the rifle you have, and have your current 300RUM rebarreled to something interesting and different. How about a 338RUM or a 375RUM? Or, with a bolt swap and a little tweaking, you could have just about anything in the long action realm, like a 35Whelen or even something really out of the mainstream like an 8mmRemMag, 358STA, or such. There are too many possibilities to cover here.

I had considered the 257 roy but for the most part I would shoot 100 gr bullets and while I could get a little more velocity I don't see any great gains in trajectory especially if I can get the retumbo recipe to work which is reported to push 3500fps

problem I am having is I just got the 300 rum I have for a 30th bday gift so I can't ethically sell it because I would and leave the C arms alone. and since I want to use the heck out of this rifle it does not make sense to me to overlap the heavier stuff I have.

and while I would use a 22 250 or something like it a fair amount I really think I want something to hunt deer with.

depending on cost I would not rule out a custom barrel/ caliber. which would open a whole new can of worms. then I may have to consider a 6.5.06. but why wouldn't I just get a 270

well I think it is settled 25.06 maybe 257roy and last choice 25.06 AI

For a Yote/deer rifle a quarterbore would be hard to beat. The heavy stuff is covered with the 300 RUM. Something about a 200gr AB at 3100 that just gives me great confidence.

Appears that you pretty much got medium/large game covered. Therefore my vote would be for a 22/250 to cover the varmint stuff. But if your looking at another larger caliber rig.

.257 Bob - You might like your .25/06, but you'll love the Bob.. I got two of em and love em...!!

Nice collection, I would take a hard look at the .257 wby, I have on that has a christensen arms barrel. Great gun, and one of my favorites. A strong varmit would be my other advice. 22.250 or so.
