HOLY ROTARY FEEDING DEVICE BATMAN!!!!

(Bring the Crash Cart I'm gonna have "the big one"!) Your friend just tripped over a Model 99 in 250 Savage!?!?!?!???? The rotary magazine was a Savage original .... later appropriated by Mr Ruger and put to extensive use on some obscure .22  :p . Your friend has a very cool rifle that many would enjoy having.... The older ones had a little brass button or counter on the side so you could see how many rounds were in the magazine. Some of the older rifles, I am told had a slower 1:14 twist rate that does not stabilize the 100 grain bullets well. They were probably intended for the 87 grainers that allowed the 250 to reach its advertising goal of 3000 fps. Quite a feat in its day. unfortunately, that 87 Grain load in those older bullets gained a reputation as a wounder of game. Probably 2 reasons: Those older bullets were not as tough and didnt probably didnt penetrate well, and the 250 could produce some spectacular results if hit just right, so people used it for things it probably was not well suited for. I really have a lot of faith in my 250 but I would not use an 87 Gr load on ELK. People did, I suspect not always successfully. Its said thats why the 300 Savage came along. problem solved.
Charles Newton, who came up with the 250-3000 round, and intended for it to be used with a 100 gr. bullet at @ 2800 fps. That load is still eminnetly successful. It is sweet to shoot, easy on the shoulder, and can be extremely accurate especially with a little faster twisst rate like 1:10. All is not lost if you've a slower twist rate. Rifles can be finicky and some will shoot the 100's well Ive heard. If not, and you have a slower twist, try the 75 Gr varmint rounds or the 85-90 Xbullets. I have not shot them, but they make a smokin' load and should do the job on deer.
The 99 (I am told) is a joy to carry, more accurate than other lever actions of its day, (although I dont believe that), quick handling, and allows "pointy" bullets and solid scope mounting.

One thing to look for. Modell 99's have been known to crack the stock where it meats the reciever. Ive never seen one with a catastrophic failure but little cracks are some what common.

$1000.00 bucks......Im sure they go for that. I think it woud be more fun to shoot and I sure give it a try. 18 years ago, I passed on a Ruger RSI in 250-3000 w/ K-4 scope for $200 bucks. . Didnt have the 200....wish I had it now. They regularly go for that much or more.
Congrats to your friend! enjoy. CL

aye this on when he got it from the father in law it had a crack nothing major but was slightly visible the guy he took it to is a wiz and fixed it ( well made exact replica) but he has the original. he looked up to buy ammo for it AND OMG NOT CHEAP.

yea, its best if you reload. Savage still chamers 2 rifles in 250 and they have been chambered by every domestic Manufacturer I can think of and some forgien ones but Remmington thinks there ammo is worth $35 a box. Winchester still catalogues it if you can find it. Some body said, "kinda ugly" Maybe but not for me....beauty is in they eye of the beholder I guess.

I don't think I could even begin to count the number of deer my Uncle has put in the freezer with either of his .243 Win 99s. I do know he buys a box of ammo about every 10 years though.

So that "invesment" has worked out pretty well for him huh? :) I know a couple guys like that. There rifles are fun to look at when you go to the range....but they are boring people.... BANG .... "yup its still on.... I'm done time to go hunting.....see ya later son." :) CL

I suppose he buys more than a box every ten years. All he's ever shot are Remington green box core lokts, and he checks the zero throughout the year on coyotes at ridiculous ranges. He's just one of those guys that can easily tell the range and knows his gun very well. We were out hunting last fall and came up on some does. I asked him the yardage, and he said 180, I used the rangefinder and it showed 183.
