One 458 too many...

Thanks A. It was just a little to obvious this time, so I figured why bother. Also thanks for the correction, I may be one of the few hunt and peck guys left. Your right also about the price, it is a bit spend y and the service can be slow. But your right it is great in thick willows. The 50 is a little overkill for me, but the 457 is kind of fun but not necessary as the 45/70 is all that one needs. But it is "different", if someone is looking for something different. And like you and Scotty say, the levers can be fun to use.

Scotty, let me add my "welcome home" also

So I have a story about the 457 lever guns. About a month ago I almost got ran over by a tresspasser. At the time I was not armed (I sure am now! And have been instructed by the local LEO that a vehical can be considered a leathal weapon (especially with a meth head behind the wheel), and that the use of leathal force as defence would be reasonable (I sure hope it never has to come to that)).

One of my truck drivers walked up to me a few days later and told me he had something for me in his truck. I walked over and he handed me a custom built 457 topped with a 2x Luepold, and a belt full of shells.

He told me the next time somebody is going to try to run me over just put one of these through the front of their rig, as he pulled out a 350 gr 457 round. "one of these will go clear through an engin block" he told me. He also told me that he shot a cow elk with it that was facing him, and it exited her rear end. I have had a chance to play with it a bit the last month, the 45-70 rounds a a real joy to shoot, the 457 rounds, well they pack a lot bigger punch! The rifle has the 16" ported barrel, and has had a trigger, and lever installed. It was built by a company in AK (can't remember the name).

So I guess my vote would be to keep the lever gun. I don't see much need, IMO, for a single shot dangerouse game rifle.

Thanks for the welcome home guys. It is great to be back.

Sean, I hope you build that 50 Alaskan. I really like everything I've read about them and think it would be an awesome rifle for up close hunting. It's on my mind now the more we've been talking about it and Starline has brass for it.

Jake, the 45-70 is a really fun rifle. 350's will clear 2100 or so out of the Guide Rifle and man, they have a lot of juice. I don't doubt the penetration you mentioned a bit. It is really hard to get enough jugs to hold a well built 45-70 bullet.

Speaking of which, I'm still on the hunt for a scope for my 45-70. Never mulled over optics so much for any rifle. I change my mind everyday on what I think I want.

Scotty, that 1.5-8X32 Minox would work perfectly on your Guide Gun.

I know Mike. It runs near the top right now. I'm sure it would be perfect actually.

I have mine mounted on the 280 Ross; it looks pretty good. I'm hoping to get to the range with it this coming week. I should have a report shortly.
