Found a trade deal I could be happy with for an XDs 3.3", 9mm today. Nice little carry gun.

Any favorite defensive ammo recommendations from the 9mm fans? I'd have ideally gotten a 45, but the deal was what it was and it was in my favor I believe.

Also have to start looking for IWB holsters. Crossbreed is on the list, but any other suggestions are welcome. :)

Tom I have two XD's in .40 S&W (one the sub-compact) and I sure like them a lot. Very reliable, accurate, and easy to shoot. Federal Hydrashock is hard to beat and Winchester makes a very good defensive round. Cannot think of the name they call it right now.

I am in line to check out at Cabela's now, actually. I looked at the HydraShock ammo, but $25/20 cost backed me up a tad. Found some Sig Elite hp ammo for $15/25 so I'm trying that for now. I run Gold Dots in my 40, so maybe I'll just order some for the 9, too. The Sig stuff will do for now. It's their "VCrown" line.... 124gr HP ar 1110 or so published MV.

I like, in this order, the following 9mm ammo :

Win 127 grain +P+ JHP
Fed 115 grain +P+ JHP
Gold Dot 124 grain +P JHP

I will post pics later, but I jug tested the Sig ammo along side my 40 running 165gr Gold Dots. I'm impressed with the Sig ammo.

Put about 30-40 rounds through the XDs today. Love it!

The short version is that the Sig 9mm ammo penetrated into the third gallon jug and looks about perfect.

The 40 Gold Dot did exactly the same, so the Sig 9mm did about the same as the 40.

Can't argue with that, really.

Some like it HOT...I think Vince is one of those guys!
Yes, when you give me a 9mm I automatically want to trade for a 357 Sig or Magnum. [emoji2]

There's quite a bit of info on the Gold Dot 124 grain +P as a self defense round (many police dept's use It) and the results have been quite satisfactory. I use the short barrel version in my Sig 938 and feeding and accuracy have been excellent.

Federal HST 147 gr in my 9mm. Works great in my XD subcompact and in my EMP. I use HST 240 gr in my .45s.

Here are the bullets from the jug test. The 40S&W is a 180gr Gold Dot, and the 9mm is a 124gr SIG Elite VCrown. I checked several known bullets on my ChargeMaster scale to be sure it was weighing correctly, so the SIG bullet must have started out heavy, obviously.

The 40 was shot from my Glock 23 into gallon water jugs at 15 yards. The same for the 9mm from the XDs. Both were found in the 3rd jug.

Both bullets side-by-side:

Pretty good performance from those bullets. Excellent pictorial representation of what shooters can expect.

I have a .40 S&W Charter Arms Pit Bull which I shoot with 150 Nosler's and IMR 4756. It is getting 1250 fps in a 2-1/2 inch magnum frame revolver. Good enough for me at almost .357 power.

I love the Speer Gold Dots and that's what I carry for self defense. My G36 gets 230gr GD's and my little Kahr CM9 gets the 124gr GD's. I haven't had any problems what so ever with either gun feeding or shooting the gold dots.
