Pimp my Rob

I fired 2 - 2 shot groups with the Win 117+P this morning with cool down time between rounds, 3.5" group.

The action and chamber are bedded, the rest of the barrel is floated. Float the whole thing? Full length bed?

I stuck a buisness card under the end of the barrel for tip pressure, it cured my vertical problem. I was getting a large group that was nearly all vertical. With tip pressure it is still 3" with zero vert, all horizontal.

I'm not familar with the Ruger Hawkeye I've only owned the older 77s. Is this stock a black plastic injection molded product? If it is the black plastic style stock that could be the problem. Even with beding the action they don't make a good foundation for accuracy, the forarm can be putting pressure on the barrel and changing the POI with each shot even with it being floated because they are so flexable.

Mule Deer on the 24hrcampfire suggested lug lapping, huge thanks to Mule Deer for the suggestion! One thing I noticed before lapping was the bolt was hard to close even on factory rounds, it was like a crush fit. After lapping the bolt closes easily, no weird signs of crazy head space or anything either. When I checked my lug contact I was less than 50% on one lug and 0% on the other.

I went out this morning with no real hope of improvement. I swapped out the factory wood for a skeleton stock I floated out off an old rifle. The Ultralite .257 balances MUCH better for me in the skeleton stock. Anyways, I set up a target @ 115yds and loaded 3 rounds of Winchester 117gr +P in the mag and settled in. I fired 1-2-3 with no cool down so the little pencil barrel was hot, but 1-2-3 went into a 1.25" group. I let the rifle completely cool and fired 3 more a few hours later, 1-2-3 was just under 1.25".

Looks like I got a new rifle for fall.

My VT in 22-250 was very stiff when I got it never fired the old brown laminate model I spent probably 3 hours lapping it when I got it and it shoots 1/4" any day of the week and sub .1" when I do my part it quickly became a favorite. Not to mention I got it way cheap felt like I stole it. $600 set up with a Nikon 6-18X40 SF scope.

Nice tip to get things figured out, who would have thought the lug contact would have been so bad. Hopefully you can bag some nice deer with it in a few months.

I would have never thought that. I lapped a couple in the past but they had decent contact, I just did them to do it. This one was unreal. The outside edge of the right lug was touching and that was it, left side was a big zero.

Good deal on the VT

That's great info Heath! How do you lap the lugs?

Glad that rifle shoots. It's a heckuva nice package.

Heath, I sorta got it once I asked the question. That process is really pretty easy actually. That does sound like a great way to get it trued up without alot of money spent.

What lapping compound did you use? I wonder if I could use the same compound I use for lapping scope rings?

Scotty that's what I did buddy. When I cycled the bolt on mine it would jam up and I had to make sure I lifted the bolt to get it to disengage from the chamber. So I took a few patches shoved them down the chamber grabbed my lapping compound out of my wheeler kit and went to work. Now she's smooth with no problems.
