Plains game with a traditional muzzleloader

Scotty, Dr Mike, Jim, Charlie and cheyenne

thank you for the congratulations and I will pass them on to Jerry.

Charlie Scotty and Jim, I also got your pms and thank you so much for your support and interest, very kind gentlemen.

Charlie, yes getting in and out of the capitol was a little scary. But once we got to the area where we hunted, it was a very isolated and unspoiled area of Africa and it was like stepping back in time. We had gone way beyond any native villages or dirt roads or anything for that matter. A bitch getting there but absolute paradise, at least for us, once we got there. The peace accord went into effect while we were hunting and we didn't know it until we returned to civilization.

Dr Mike your daughter and friends have been there and understand the pure brutality of the LRA, as well as what needs to be done to help this small country get back to some type of normal living, at least living without being in constant fear.

As for you cheyenne, for the time being this old broad can still out shoot you, you young whippersnapper, but your post will get a laugh from Jerry, thanks for commenting cheyenne.

Appreciate the comments, support and congratulations, I will pass them on to the big guy

Scotty, you posted while I was typing, yes, and not to bad within 50 yards. The problem was of course the weather in relationship to using the flintlock and the fact he insisted on not using a scope. He had several shots available to him had he not been hunting with a flintlock, at least with the Derby, Bongo and Sing/Sing. the problem with the lion was never a clear shot. He did not practice for anything over 50 yards, as he had already decided that we was not going to shoot past that.

Scotty, I completely forgot, when i left camp to go to town the first time, Jerry said ask Scotty if he would be comfortable with Lori backing him up on a lion hunt. We are sure you would , but in regards to what he ask me, he wanted you to think about it also, he was just joking with you Scotty

I also noticed when I answered scotty just now that i made a typo in my prior posts which has been corrected

Very cool info A. As for Lori backing me up against lions? Well, maybe we should practice on wood chucks or foxes first! You know, just to make sure she has time to replay it, in case the first round doesn't go right! Ha!

Seeing as how a lion can cover 100 yards in 4 seconds, that may be a wise course of action?

Congrats on the hunt Aleena and Jerry! I love black powder deer season, but not enough to use a flintlock. Good on Jerry for using one. It must give him an added bit of accomplishment?

Congrats again to Jerry.....but 50 yards???? Man....

Tell him I'll be glad to go along as a "gun bearer," and anything out there at 75-100 I will gladly shoot for him. On his behalf, of course. ;)

I'm assuming he used a patched round ball? If so, what patch/ball and power charge did he use? Just curious, since I'm about 2 years out from having my own 62-cal flinter.

thank you Tom

Tom, I am on a dead run right now and about to board, but I will get back to you with the information you have requested.

getting powder into a country that is in the middle of a civil war is not easy, so you are at the mercy of other people. As to the distance, he is shooting about 4 inches low at 100 yards if he is at zero at 75, maybe 70----- So why the need to get so close. If you wound an animal in that part of the world you have lions immediately competing with you to finish off the kill, especially if the wounded animal is making any, I am hurt sounds, plus the smell of blood. He was determined to have one shot kills and passed on many potential opportunities to accomplish that. Will try to catch up to you tomorrow

Tom, I know the rifle your getting and it is a work of art. I am not sure I would be able to wait 2 years, but I dont think you have a choice with him as he is that far out there to finish what he has ahead of yours and then to do yours. It will certainly be something worth waiting for

John, I've already waited one out of the THREE year wait, lol.

I NEED the time, man....that rifle ain't gonna be cheap!

Tom, in reference to the powder, Goex and Pyrodex are not available here, there is still some Elephant powder around, but Jerry does not like it. He ask them to get Swiss, as that is what he prefers and they did. His second choice was Wano. Sannadex is made here, but he thinks that powder is best used for fertilizer than for hunting

He prefers 2f or sometimes 3f, but he never uses 4f, especially for the 62. He said to tell you that he has no two rifles that shoot the same load, so you will need to start low and work up and see which powder charge works best for your rifle, but you already know this.

I am forgetting the name of the patch, but it is already lubricated. and a cast ball.

Tom, you will have better options available to you in the states than we do. I am sure you know this but he said that he thinks Martin will fire it for you and then recommend the best load for that rifle. He also said that he feels you have far more muzzleloading knowledge than he does and that you and Martin will have that new rifle shooting like it was being shot by Sgt York.

He said to tell you that he has no doubt that you could have taken the game at longer distances, and that he would prefer having you as a gun bearer than the one he had. I have no idea who he is talking about, because I didnt carry his damn gun lol

Thanks, Aleena. Was just curious what size ball and what patch thickness.

You are correct, Martin and I will work out at least some of the particulars with the rifle. He will have it regulated to shoot with proper windage without the sights being drifted off center, for starters.

In a jaeger-style rifle such as Jerry was using, I'd think he'd use 3F....I will have to decided between 2F and 3F in the Martin rifle I'm getting. The very long barrel would lend itself to the slower 2F. With a 45" tube, a huge charge will not be needed. Most stay under 100gr., even with the 62.

Tom, I have had two more requests for loading info and would like to advise all those who are looking for information regarding hunting with a muzzleloader to ask Tom. I am sure there are others as well who has a lot of knowledge on this subject. But I know Tom does.

I do not personally care for them, but Jerry does. As Tom knows Jerry has already gone back to work and we are not even in the same country right now, so I am not 100% sure of this, because he had a few different items for two different flintlocks. But, from my recollection

For the Derby, 90 gr of 3F Swiss and a 610 ball and .025 patch thickness

Aleena, thank Jerry for the info. I'm not surprised he went with 3F.

I see a lot of folks with 62's running 600 balls, but I was curious if he ran a 600 or 610.

In 2 years, I can tell you what I'll be shooting, lol.

Man, my heart goes out to that Jerry. I know it must be a struggle... Having to carry brushes, makeup and a mirror, along with his muzzleloader and possibles!

No wonder the poor guy only hunts once in awhile, he is probably worn out!

LOL well played scotty

Actually I was wondering how he got anything with someone asking him. Are you sure you put in a ball and patch, dont you think we should have been more to the right of him, for christ sales, shoot, he is not going to stand there forever, by the way did you bury the trash before we left camp. lol

BTW Jerry, congratulations, especially considering the handicap you are hunting with

Scotty, Sean, you two are in deep do do. she wont do it here on this forum but she will get you back.

Congratulations Jerry, but it was easier for you as you had someone there to pick up after you, cook for you, clean up for you,, allowed you to say "me Tarzan, you jane" without laughing..

I'm not skeered!

Congrats to Gerry for an action packed hunt. The Lord Derby is on my bucket list and to take one with a flintlock would be special. Sounds like he thinks everything through. You are happy, right dear? LOL
